2015 and the new war for talent: Acute shortage of qualified professionals in Public Relations

The number of students graduating is insufficient to meet rising industry demand

The Public Relations industry is experiencing an acute shortage of qualified professionals to fill vacancies as job opportunities are increasing across the PR industry in Ireland. The fall in the number of PR graduates, combined with the rising demand of qualified specialists in the sector, has created a war for new talent in the industry in Ireland.

“At last, after a few years of uncertainty, the economy looks set for recovery. That is good news for PR professionals, as recruitment picks up and job opportunities arise. But how easy is it to hire Public Relations qualified staff when you are a growing company? Not very easy. Even since this time last year, demand for qualified professionals has spiked and employers are becoming very vocal about their concerns”, says Noel Murphy, Managing Director of Fitzwilliam Institute Group, the longest PR training provider in Ireland.

“Fitzwilliam Institute Group is the leading PR training provider in Ireland. We started off with a Postgraduate Diploma in PR course, 25 years ago, to provide qualified graduates for the Public Relations industry. Over the years, we trained a large percentage of the senior, key people in the sector and they are today’s employers. They come back to us looking for graduates because our PR courses, accredited by the PRII, are the best available to the industry. We have an unique admission process for these courses – by interview – and we ensure our graduates are always the best. Sadly, what we noticed lately is that the number of students graduating is insufficient to meet the rising industry demand. There are more PR jobs than practitioners and employers are very concerned about the drastic shortage of PR qualified professionals”, he added.
