WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE AN ONLINE GAMER

Posted 3rd March 2010.

The latest research commissioned by www.WinMonkey.co.uk of 1,097 people has shown that 1 in 3 of the respondents would consider online gaming for prizes and entering competitions as a full time profession if they thought they could earn enough to warrant it and support themselves financially.

Winmonkey.co.uk, whose slogan is dont buy it…win it! wanted to conduct the research to investigate attitudes towards entering competitions and playing games for prizes online. Of the 34% who admitted they would consider earning a living through entering competitions and online gaming, just over half, 51%, said they would sell the prizes they won to raise cash, if the prize itself wasnt money.

The study also found that winning presents is also becoming more appealing, with 47% claiming they have entered a competition in the past with a view to giving the prize as a gift to someone for their Birthday or other special occasion.

Of those who said they wouldnt consider online gaming for prizes and entering competitions as a full time profession, 67% said they would do it to earn cash in hand on top of their income from their job.

Nearly 1 in 5, 18%, of the people who took part in the survey said they had entered a competition or played on online game for a prize whilst they were at work and 13% said they would always try to win a product first before they paid out for it.

Jenny Dyson, a regular user of WinMonkey.co.uk, has won over £1000 worth of prizes after spending just 10% of that amount. She commented;

I was surprised at how much I was able to win by paying out just a small amount. I only bought a small amount monkey nuts and won over £1000 worth of prizes, including a Nintendo Wii console with Wii Fit and GHD hair straighteners and if I was to go on to sell these items I could be making a huge profit, so I can see why people would do it as a profession if they could get away with it financially. I certainly would!

So far I have technically increased my winnings tenfold and some of my prizes would have had a hefty price tag if I would have bought them out of my own backpocket. I would suggest that anyone at least tries to win a product before they consider buying it, as theres not a lot to lose. This is especially true for students on a budget!

Sam Notaro, managing director of WinMonkey.co.uk, commented on these findings;

As the main ethos of our site is dont buy it… win it! we wanted to see how many would consider doing so for all of the products they wanted. We were pleased to see that more than 1 in 10 would try and win something before they went out and bought it, as this is something that could potentially save money in the long run.

Some of the prizes we have on WinMonkey.co.uk, such as the Xbox 360 Elite and the PlayStation 3 Slim consoles, are worth a lot of money and its certainly no bad thing that people consider winning them to give as a gift. Theres a lot of money to be saved through the skill based competitions such as those on our website.
