Wedding bells, running shoes and coasteering

Posted 1st April 2010.

RUNNING the London Marathon, coasteering in Wales and getting married within a month sounds mad, but thats the hectic agenda for one man from South Ockendon, Essex.
28-year-old Tom Benton will be running the 26-mile popular stretch through the capital on April 26 in aid of the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. The following weekend he will be on his stag do with friends coasteering along the cliffs of Pembrokeshire followed by getting married to his fiance Gemma Bartoli.

Tom said: The London Marathon is always something Ive wanted to do. I remember watching it on TV and saying to my friends, Ill do that next year this year my friends are running and I think thats given me the incentive to join them.

The young farmer, who raised more than £9000 for three charities when he and his brother completed the three peaks challenge last year, aims to raise £2000 as a result of his London Marathon stint.

The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity provides support to cancer patients through a network of cancer support centres. The centres offer a range of complementary therapies including reflexology, aromatherapy and counselling. The aim of the centres is to give support in a peaceful environment where cancer is not considered taboo.  The charity also funds an extensive research programme with research nurses caring for patients on clinical drug trials while a team of scientists undertake studies into the disease.

Tom said: I wanted to raise money for a local charity and after meeting a couple of the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity fundraisers at an event I decided to raise money for that charity.

Training has been going really well especially as we have had team trainers to guide us. Sabina & Graham Bird, our coaches, have mapped out daily plans for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity runners. Their weekly planner is really helpful giving guidance on how many miles to do each day, when to have rest days and we all run together sometimes its been hard going and we are clocking up 40 miles per week each.

Tom is looking forward to the hectic month ahead of him as he gears up for the marathon, coasteering and marrying his girlfriend of nine years.
