What is Urinary Tract Infection?
Urinary Tract Infection, abbreviated as UTI, is an infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. If a Urinary Tract Infection occurs in the lower part of the urinary tract, it is referred to as bladder infection or cystitis. If a Urinary Tract Infection occurs in the upper part of the urinary tract, it is referred to as kidney infection or pyelonephritis. Infections of the urinary tract most commonly occur in women and in children. However, they can also happen to men as well but more rarely. Untreated UTIs can cause unbearable discomfort and that is why diagnostic tests for UTI should be performed on anyone that is suspected to have it.
Signs and Symptoms of UTI
There are various signs and symptoms that concern medical doctors that its patient might have a Urinary Tract Infection. That includes:
• Burning Sensation while Urinating
• Frequent Urge to Urinate
• Pain Above Pubic Bone
• Pain in the Lower Back
• Flank Pain
• Fever
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Blood in Urine
• Pus in Urine
Persons that experience several of the symptoms above are sent to perform diagnostic tests for UTIs. The preferred diagnostic test for diagnosing UTI is urinalysis. Urinalysis involves a person giving a sample of its urine in a sterile bottle to the laboratory. If a person has excessive amount of urinary nitrites, leukocyte esterase, and leukocytes, then UTI diagnosis is definite.
Causes, Risk Factors and Treatment of UTI
In almost 99% cases of UTIs, the cause of them is a bacterium called Escherichia colli. In other cases of UTIs, their causes include some other bacteria or fungi. There are also risk factors for a person to develop UTI. Those risk factors include:
• Female Anatomy
• Recent Sexual Intercourse
• Obesity
• Family History of UTI
• Diabetes
Once diagnostic tests for UTI have concluded that a person has UTI, that person is advised to take antibiotics to treat its UTI.
