Over 60% of British workers would prefer to start and end their working day earlier, according to a new survey. educogym Canary Wharf debate the new timings.
It was said that 25% of those surveyed by YouGov, would prefer to start work at 8am and finish at 4pm. “I think the typical 9-5 is starting to get outdated, at educogym Canary Wharf we are open from 6am-8pm, so our shifts are divided into six to one and twelve to eight, I think most of the staff find that working hours like these means avoiding the rush hour which is great!” explained Orlstyne Wilson, personal trainer at Educogym Canary Wharf.

The next most popular timing was 8:30am until 4:30pm, which was favoured by 13%, closely followed by 7am to 3pm favoured by 10%. “It is pretty clear that workers like to avoid the rush hour, even if just by half an hour, but what I think also helps is the extra half an hour or so in the evenings, even though you wake up earlier to get to work, having more time to wind down and relax in the evenings is great, some people may finish at 5, leave at 5:15pm and not get home until after 7pm, this doesn’t leave much time to do anything when you get home other than eat and sleep, however finishing at 4pm, means an easy quick journey home, home by 5:30 and plenty of time to relax and do what you want to do in the evening” explained Godfrey Nurse, personal trainer at educogym Canary Wharf.

Almost 20% of those aged 18-24 said they wanted to start work after 9am rather than before, with only 9% of those aged 54 to 65 choosing these times. “I think the main factor with the younger generation is social activities, starting later means lay ins, time to socialise the night before knowing you don’t have to get up early the next day, staying out late is more popular for them and so start late goes hand in hand with that” pointed out Orlstyne Wilson, Educogym personal trainer.

Data from the Office for national Statistics also revealed that one in ten, perhaps unsurprisingly, believe they are overemployed, meaning they feel they work more hours than they want to “Sadly, not everyone is fulfilled in their jobs, and many are working purely for money and so longer hours feel like over working, however they say that when you find a job you love, you never work an hour in your life, I would think majority of people are in this situation and so feel over worked and unsatisfied at work” said Godfrey Nurse, educogym personal trainer.

Whatever hours you prefer, it seems most of the UK are in favour of ditching the 9-5 for something earlier or later, hat would you choose if you had the choice? Let us know!
