Keeping pace with trends and technologies is essential to any organizations success, but implementing learning and development programs that prepare the workforce for upcoming changes is critical. Chief Learning Officers (CLOs) have to ensure the organization and its employees are one strategic step ahead of the competition. It is the companies that respond to trends the fastest that will be the most successful, says Janet Clarey, Senior Researcher and Analyst at Brandon Hall Research. What solutions could CLOs provide to some of the challenges facing organizations today?

Janet Clarey: The fast pace of change that we are experiencing today calls for a greater need for agility. The successful organizations will be those that are able to respond to environmental changes the fastest, especially in the information or knowledge industry.

What is your outlook on the future of this industry?

Janet Clarey: There will be a slight increase in e-learning as organizations reduce travel budgets and other costs. I also see learning going towards collaborative learning, communities of practice and informal learning driven by social media tools. Many organizations will look towards social learning technologies this year, but they will need to reconcile with the associated privacy and productivity concerns.

These tools often consist in a cloud computing environment, and are cheaper than owning and maintaining software and hardware within the organization. But it is not just the hosted aspect of e-learning management systems where someone takes the software and hosts it on their server that will change; there will be a move towards platform as a service type models. Everyone is familiar with software as a service, but we are starting to see platform type of service solutions enabling organizations to develop their own customized agendas whilst the software and hardware are hosted outside.

How can CLOs maximize funds allocated for learning and development?

Janet Clarey: Cloud computing is an option that allows IT services on demand; semi-customized versus fully customized content is the best way in my opinion.

Social learning technologies are a great way of getting a lot out of available funds, as learners can control the tools themselves, instead of someone creating the content and pushing it onto them.
