Televisions.com publishes review of Philips 42 PFL 9803 H

Posted 12th January 2010.

January 6, 2010 – In a review published today, Televisions.com, a new TV-reviews platform, evaluates the picture quality, features, operation, and built-in speakers of the Philips 42 PFL 9803 H. The reviewers combine sophisticated measurement technology with subjective testing to give devices an overall rating; the Philips scored 6.8 out of 10 points. Positive features listed by the review include a high contrast ratio and low power consumption, which the testers attribute to the screens local-dimming technology and LED backlight. The reviewers also liked the TVs Ambilight technology, which casts a soft glow behind the TV using the current pictures colours in order to reduce eye strain for those viewing in dark environments. But criticism goes to the artefacts that the automatic LED adjustment produces in the picture, as well as to the lack of format-switching for HD signals. Test sequences revealed that Blu-ray 24p signals show judder this represents a major down-side of the 42 PFL 9803 H. Televisions.coms head tester and editor in chief, Florian Friedrich, said: Home-theatre fans will grimace at the inaccurate 24p playback, which many other devices handle perfectly.

The review goes on to consider the TVs operation, with the team praising the Philips attractive on-screen menu and slim remote control, which, they say, provides convenient, direct access to functions such as the Ambilight or the Electronic Program Guide (EPG). Multimedia also impressed the testers on the 42 PFL 9803 H, which offers playback of music and photos via both USB and a PC network using the DLNA standard. The Philips built-in speakers receive praise for their rich bass and balanced music playback, but one reviewer said: We evaluate a flat-panel TVs speakers in relation to what the market currently has to offer. Since the flat-panel revolution, its rare to find truly powerful speakers in a TV there simply isnt enough space within the devices casings. No TVs speakers can properly match the performance of a full home-cinema audio system.
