UK Start Up Forced To Move Abroad As People In The UK Don’t Want To Work!

A recent tech start up that was fortunate to receive a significant investment offer from Middle East Investors has been forced to relocate the business from its home city of Leicester (UK) to the UAE because it couldn’t find staff in the UK!

The founder has left a parting shot to the UK Prime Minister (see the letter below) – He is also leaving behind almost £50,000 of office equipment and offering it for free to budding entrepreneurs and small businesses in a bid to get them some much needed help – something he feels the government should be doing!

Here is the letter!

11th December 2012 Re: State of employment in United Kingdom

Dear Mr Cameron et al,

I would like to take this opportunity to bring to your attention my views and experiences with the current condition of the UK jobs situation and I have to say it’s been a rather disturbing occurrence.

I was fortunate enough to recently receive an investment funding offer for a technology start-up company. The funding was to cover the office set up along with the need to recruit a team of IT developers, secretarial, customer service and sales staff. In total we anticipated the need to employ up to 40 people in the first year and had access to the funding to achieve this.

I decided to base the company in my home city of Leicester. It’s centrally located in the UK with good transport links giving us a wider pool of candidates to search from.

We spent in the region of £50,000 on office set up in preparation for the company launch.

Here comes the disappointment.

With almost 6 months of ‘recruiting’ we were still no nearer to finding suitable candidates for MOST of the positions in any significant numbers!

We were offering competitive salaries (in line with similar roles ) and also a city centre location to work out of in a modern office environment. However, we simply did not receive the response to job ad’s that we would have expected. Some of the responses from applicants were somewhat shocking,

“I only applied to show the job centre that I am going to interviews”

“the salary isn’t enough for me to come off benefits”

The work culture in the UK seems to have evaporated. We can’t give jobs away for love nor money!

Our offices were based directly opposite Leicester’s main job centre so we actually spent days handing out leaflets to the unemployed to actively ask them to forward their details to be considered for some of the more straight forward roles (customer service and secretarial) and still no luck!

Our funders have now lost patience and we have been forced to relocate the base to the Middle East (close to their own offices).

Would you believe that with the first job advert in the Middle East, we received over 500 quality applications just for one of the positions (the salary offered was also lower in comparison to what we were offering in the UK)!

Just goes to show there is a deep rooted problem in the work culture in this country. A new start up that wants to bring in over 40 jobs in this country is forced to go abroad as people simply don’t want to work here due to the benefits culture suiting them more!

The sad thing is that those people that really want to make a go of it in this country, namely small businesses, start ups, first time entrepreneurs, don’t get the kind of support they need to make a start.

As a show of support to those people and to highlight the clear problems with the ‘no work’ ‘prefer benefits’ culture, with the support of our funders, we have decided to give away almost £50,000 worth of equipment to any small business or ‘want to be entrepreneur’. We have been offered a significant sum for this to be purchased back from us but feel that it’s more important to make a statement and give it all away to those that really will be the future of this country’s economy – small businesses!

We give our office back to the landlord in a couple of weeks and rather than sell the equipment, desks, chairs, computers etc – we would like to get the word out that it’s there for anyone to pick up for free that will get some use out of it!

I truly hope that your government takes note of this as I’m certain it’s repeating itself all over the country and not just in my home city!

Time to put aside the coalition quibbles and policies directed towards re-election and put the people of this country first so that new jobs that are created can be filled and the benefits culture is changed to only give government support to those that are truly deserving – the rest need to get back into work and you and your government need to support small businesses to take these people into employment – otherwise many more small firms will be forced to do what we had to – go abroad!

Yours,

Saf Gaffar
