SFS has been supplying the authority with vehicles for over 10 years and this latest fleet will facilitate the rollout of a new twin-stream, co-mingled collection service in the district.</p>
<p>Andrew Wilkins, Service Manager, Aylesbury Vale District Council said: &#8220;Flexibility and value for money are our top priorities and SFS always delivers on both accounts. The new vehicles are crucial to the success of our new service and have been specified for maximum load and efficiency, whilst being able to reach difficult to access areas.&#8221;</p>
<p>Andrew continued: &#8220;Our initial target is 60% recycling in the district and after some door to door consultation with residents we have constructed a new service that includes weekly food waste collections, with alternate residual waste and recyclable waste collections.&#8221;</p>
<p>The 6-year lease hire agreement commences in August 2012 when the 16 new RCV&#8217;s, all from Dennis Eagle with Terberg Bin Lifts and Food Pods, will be delivered to Aylesbury.</p>
<p>A member of the Rothschild Banking Group, SFS runs its own network of workshops and provides vehicle hire and fleet management services to the public and private sector, including maintenance, workshop management, service scheduling, compliance and testing, accident management, breakdown support, staff training and technical advice.</p>

<p>Jodie Scott, Group Procurement Category Manager, Biffa said: &#8220;SFS have shown a thorough understanding of our business requirements and have proven to be flexible, with the capacity to deal with the unexpected very well. Their support in a continuous changing and demanding market has provided the platform to work strategically with Biffa.&#8221;</p>
<p>The 5-year contract hire agreement comprises 25 vehicles, which will be used to collect a combination of domestic and trade waste. The fleet consists of: 19 Dennis Olympus 21 wide bodied 6&#215;2 Elite 2 Rear Steer Chassis and 2 x Olympus 13 wide bodied on 6&#215;2 Elite Chassis, all with Zöller compact low level lifts; 2 x Terberg top loaders 28 cu.m on Dennis Eagle Elite 6&#215;2 mid-lift chassis; plus 1 x Mitsubishi Canter Tipper and 1 x Mercedes Atego 10 tonne.</p>
<p>Bob Sweetland, Managing Director, SFS said: &#8220;This contract is a prime example of how we can bring a different approach to fleet provision in the private sector. We are well established and the combination of our expertise and parentage gives us a flexibility not often found in the contract hire sector.&#8221;</p>
<p>BIFFA won the £32 million 8 year contact to take over refuse and recycling collections across Winchester and East Hampshire in October and they have been rolling out a new integrated cross-border waste and recycling collection service.</p>
<p>David Maidman, Operations Director, Biffa said: &#8220;SFS have been a critical partner in helping us the meet the financial targets for this contract and in ensuring that the vehicles were delivered on time and to specification.&#8221;</p>

“Forklifts are widely used at our depots, but in 2009 we had over 100 forklift truck leases with 37 suppliers across the UK, in addition to the 80 forklifts that we owned” says Danny Riley, Supply Chain Manager for Speedy Services. “Our objective was to have one supplier who could provide standardised service levels nationwide, reduced costs and complete visibility.”<br />
Speedy is the UK’s largest provider of equipment rental and support services to construction, manufacturing, industrial, rail and related industries. The company also sells equipment and provides a range of support services through its UK network of over 325 depots and 3,600 employees. “We were able to establish a shortlist of potential forklift suppliers straight away and Barloworld was just one of two suppliers that we considered could cover the UK as one business with a standardised service offering” he says. “Barloworld offered the best total solution and most competitive prices.” Barloworld Handling, the exclusive distribution partner for Hyster in the UK, is one of the few forklift companies that have a truly national service offering with 17 regional customer support centres and more than 500 skilled service engineers nationwide. Steve Doran, Key Accounts Manager for Barloworld Handling was key in developing the relationship with Speedy Services and ensuring the equipment was fit for purpose. Steve audited more than 100 Speedy depots to identify useage and establish the correct equipment specification and service requirements. On average, each truck operates for about ten hours a week, which is considered a low intensity operation. Therefore in order to provide the most cost effective solution Barloworld has supplied high quality pre-owned Hyster equipment from its ‘QUE’ used equipment programme.<br />
Steve Doran explains “Used Hyster forklifts from Barloworld’s QUE programme are an ideal solution for the low intensity forklift operations at Speedy. The majority of the fleet is composed of 2,500kg capacity Hyster H2.5FT Fortens machines which are highly reliable and provide a low cost of operation for Speedy. Barloworld have also supplied some high capacity lift trucks up to 12 tonnes for the fleet.”<br />
Barloworld started to deliver the trucks as existing leases ran out and has achieved 100% on time delivery since then to ensure Speedy centres are not without a forklift during the transition. Barloworld is also maintaining more than 80 trucks owned by Speedy through its Truckserve planned maintenance programme and all trucks receive an annual thorough examination to ensure the centres comply with LOLER regulations*.<br />
“Barloworld has looked after everything and has worked with us to provide a flexible contract to support growth and change within our business” adds Danny. “Most importantly, we have reduced costs and are receiving effective and consistent levels of local support from Barloworld Handling at our centres throughout the UK.”<br />

<p>RVS specialises in re-manufacturing refuse vehicles to the same specification and quality as new vehicles direct from the manufacturers, for 40% less cost on average. Spencer Law, Managing Director, RVS said: “We’ve had orders for 10 trucks and still counting, as a result of people visiting our stand at the show. Even the vehicle we were showcasing has gone.”</p>
<p>RVS’ superbly presented re-manufactured 6&#215;2 Dennis Eagle chassis with Elite body and Terberg OmniDel bin lift, was a talking point at the show.</p>
<p>Added Spencer: “We are confident that our re-manufactured vehicles are as good as new, and we go to great lengths to make sure that they stand the test of time. We help private contractors and local authorities get more value for money out of their fleets.”</p>
<p>Andy Collett, owner of Collett Transport Services Ltd (CTS), one of the industry’s leading vehicle hire companies, was so impressed with the vehicle on display at the show that he decided to buy it.</p>
<p>Andy said: “I could see immediately that the quality of the vehicle was of a superior standard, and it was clear that a lot of time and effort had been spent on it. I’ve ordered two more vehicles of the identical specification.”</p>
<p>RVS are already looking forward to attending the show next year.</p>
<p>CIWM Chief Executive Steve Lee said: “We are delighted with the feedback we have had from many exhibitors at this first RWM in partnership with CIWM Exhibition, and are very pleased that Refuse Vehicle Solutions had such a successful show.</p>
<p>“With over 13,000 visitors all the indications are that the merger was the right move for our sector.”</p>
