UK Motor Insurance - Coldest Winter in 30 Years Sees £395 Million Worth of Claims

The sharpest, coldest winter to hit the United Kingdom in the last 30 years has seen a staggering £395 million worth of UK motor insurance claims paid out to motorists who struggled to control their vehicles on the treacherous motorways.

The Association of British Drivers revealed last week that around 270,000 UK motor insurance claims were processed, filing for accidental vehicle damage caused on the highways between the months of December 2009 and January 2010.

Many British motorists actually took the significant financial decision to purchase a greater number of 4x4 vehicles. Used-car sales website, Carmony.co.uk reported a significant increase in sales during the icy conditions in a bid to combat the snow and ice.

Meanwhile, Nick Starling, the Association of British Drivers director of general insurance and health, admitted that UK car insurance providers have been incredibly busy answering the hefty backlog of claims.

Mr Starling said: "Insurers will always respond quickly to the large number of claims that often result from bad weather."

Car Insurance providers, Swiftcover recorded that there were 75% more car insurance claims made in 2010 than at the same time in 2009 highlighting the increased dangers when driving in ice and snow.

The increasing temperatures this week suggests that Britain has now seen the worst of the weather leave its shores, but careful and vigilant driving will continue to ensure motorists can maintain a cost-effective car insurance policy.
