British forces and their families abroad will now be able to shop online with ease, thanks to a new dataset introduced by Royal Mail and implemented for the first time by address specialist Postcode Anywhere.

Previously, British forces working abroad could not take advantage of address validation and auto-fill technology, which enables consumers to order goods online or by telephone rapidly and easily.

From today, Postcode Anywhere has integrated new Royal Mail British Forces Post Office (BFPO) data into its suite of address management tools. Any address entered is automatically cross-checked against Royal Mail data to ensure orders don’t go astray.

Mike Newnham, Royal Mail’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “Royal Mail is intensely proud of its strong and enduring links with the armed services and we are delighted we have played our part in implementing this important initiative.

“We understand how much service personnel and their families based overseas value being able to shop online and how they will benefit from gaining access to a range of online services too.

“We have been working closely with the BFPO to develop an address and postcode structure consistent with Royal Mail’s Postcode Address File (PAF®) that will provide businesses with the opportunity to make these services available.”

All BFPO post is delivered by Royal Mail to an address in the UK for distribution overseas.

To fit the PAF® format as closely as possible, each BFPO number has been assigned a postcode and the PAF® post town field contains “BFPO”, to allow BFPO addresses to be easily included in address management products.

Postcode Anywhere’s managing director Guy Mucklow said: “Over the years we have received a regular stream of requests for British Forces Post Office data and, until now, have not been able to satisfy them.

“Receiving this data is therefore an important addition to both our service as well as to the Royal Mail’s PAF® dataset and I am sure will help to reduce a lot of the frustrations which our armed forces and their families have encountered when trying to perform simple tasks such as ordering goods online to be delivered to their bases.

“Address validation is an established technology which we now take for granted in the UK when talking to a call centre or ordering goods online. But if your address data doesn’t match, the best-case scenario is a lengthy ordering process. At the other end of the scale we have missed deliveries and possibly even a situation where it’s impossible to make a transaction online or over the phone.

“Royal Mail’s BFPO data should make a huge difference to the lives of our armed forces, and this is why Postcode Anywhere is proud to be one the first suppliers to integrate BFPO data into its range of address management services.”

The next three months will see fudge flavours come to the fore at the Old Rowsley Station Fudge Shop as Peak Village Shopping Outlet in Rowsley hosts an invent a fudge flavour competition, with all proceeds going to charity and a £20 shopping voucher to the creator of the winning flavour.

There are separate categories for Adults (£1 entry) and Children (50p entry) and entries will be judged by French chef Pascale Ravoire of the Old House in Hope Valley. Pascale hails from the Mont Blanc region in the French Alps and will be looking for unusual – but edible flavours!

All those who take part in the fudge flavour finder competition will be helping to raise vital funds for national charity Crohn’s and Colitis UK. Crohn’s disease and Colitis affect about 250,000 people in Britain and all the money raised in the Peak Village ‘fudge fest’ will enable the charity to offer help and support to those suffering from these crippling conditions.

“Charity fundraising is very much on our shopping list and new fudge flavours are a tasty way to do it,” said Terrence Morgan of Peak Village. “The competition is easy for children and adults alike to take part in and at £1 for adults and just 50p for children it will not break the bank, while all the money raised is going to a really deserving charity that needs our support.”

Christenings, along with the birth are some of the most important times in a baby’s life. However, unfortunately for little Aisling Erin Doherty, her rocker dad, Peter Doherty was absent at her christening.

The 12-week olds christening was held at a church in Cape Town, South Africa while it was fairly obvious that her dad, the ex-Libertine’s singer aged 32 was missing from the ceremony. There was famously a lot of controversy in the national press surrounding the South African model, Lindi Hingston and her alleged relationship with Doherty.

She won a legal battle over claims she slept with him and there were a number of newspapers, including the now obsolete News of the World who were forced to make retractions and that also had to pay out for damages.

Doherty was informed of the baby girl’s birth when he was serving time in prison for possession of a class a drug. He was asked about the baby and confirmed the little girl was his and how surprised he was about hearing that the baby’s mother discussed their child in the South African press.

It appears that there was no apparent reason for the Babyshambles lead singer to have missed the baby’s christening as he has been released from prison, however Doherty’s representative has refused to comment on the matter. However that isn’t to say that the baby girl didn’t receive any christening gifts from her father.

Getting less than six hours of sleep can significantly increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and congestive heart failure, according to a recent study. Findings by the American College of Cardiology reveal that sleeping less can escalate the chances of health problems including obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.

The research, which involved around 3,000 patients over the age of 45, found that getting inadequate sleep can hurt your performance. It showed that those people who slept under six hours were twice as likely to have a stroke or heart attack and are 1.6 times more probably to have heart failure. However, the survey also found that sleeping more than eight hours was also not good for your heart and raised the risk of chest pain and coronary artery disease.

Previous studies have shown that people who slept four to six hours a night had a declined ability to sustain attention and therefore it affected the quality of productivity and work. What is more, insufficient sleep has been linked to increased levels of stress hormones and inflammatory markers.
