THE OPEN EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN EAST ANGLIA

The Revd. Christopher Morgan, a former Church of England Minister, is to be received into the Open Episcopal Church on Sunday 11th December 2011 at Kings Lynn Town Hall.

Fr. Christopher will be the FIRST member of the Open Episcopal Church in Norfolk, and indeed in the whole of East Anglia.

The Open Episcopal Church celebrated its 10th year earlier in 2011. It is not a new denomination, rather a contemporary expression of the Old Catholic Church which can trace its roots back to the earliest Church. The Church was the vision of another former Church of England Minister, now Archbishop of the Church, the Most Revd. Jonathan Blake. Fr Christopher will be the third Church of England Minister to join the Open Episcopal Church, following the Revd, Mark Townsend from Herefordshire who joined the church earlier this year.

“The Open Episcopal Church is radically different in many ways from traditional churches. We are committed to be wholly inclusive, never turning anyone away, or making them feel they have to jump through hoops or meet certain criteria so that we can Minister to them. We are available and Minister to ALL without exception. Many of our Clergy work wholly in the community, with those who are forgotten or marginalised. We are not concerned with converting people or putting them into boxes, – we don’t expect people to come to church – we come to them. We are certainly not concerned about what people do or do not believe, we respect and work with all who ask for our help whatever their background, beliefs or lifestyles. We are here to be alongside people where they are at. We NEVER judge others.

We offer the same life-event Ministry as other Churches, i.e. Baptisms, Naming and Dedications, Funerals and Marriage Celebrations, but these are conducted in a way that meets the needs and desires of the families asking for them. For example, we Baptise (Christen) Children and Adults wherever families wish, in gardens, on the beach, stately homes, Golf Clubs, mountain tops, even the local pub ! We can tailor services to meet family’s exact needs – we are not constrained by a particular set of words or ways of doing things, we work closely with families to make their celebration, whether Baptism, marriage or Celebrations of life EXACTLY as they would want it to be.

The same is true with marriage celebrations, and we make no distinction between heterosexual and gay couples, neither do we discriminate against those who have been married or in committed relationships before. Although the law does not yet allow us to contract the legal part of the marriage service in England, we offer a full Christian marriage service , unlike the Church of England service of Blessing which is seen by so many couples as second best. The way we operate with marriages is very similar to the rules in mainland Europe where the legal registration is separated from the actual ceremony itself. With funeral services, we aim to celebrate the lives of loved ones, working closely with families to ensure that the service is just that, a celebration, we don’t use language in these services that families might find alien or unwelcoming – each service is different, and for all these life event moments families can write their own words for vows , prayers etc. We are not constrained by a particular way of doing things, and are happy even conducting non-religious life celebrations.”

Fr Christopher’s Ministry will be based near Swaffham where, from late January 2012 he will be offering a weekly Mass, bringing regular worship to the heart of the Community in which he lives and works. Whilst the actual service itself follows a formal pattern, it is wholly inclusive in its language and in its appeal – the Open Episcopal Church operates an Open Table, in that anyone can come and receive the Bread and Wine that is shared together at the climax of Mass. No-one is excluded due to their beliefs, or the rules of their previous Church. Also because this is being offered within the community, many of the things that people have said to they feel uncomfortable about with traditional churches have been taken away. There are no committees for people to be asked to join, no churchyard or brass cleaning, no uncomfortable groups – its just about sharing each week something of the Bible, which is done in a contemporary , liberal and healthy way – not preaching at people – and sharing the spiritual food that is offered. Scam Detectives work in raising awareness of online scams shortlisted in annual Internet awards, competing for recognition in the UK and global Internet community

17th June 2011 " North Wales based scam awareness project Scam Detectives has been shortlisted in the Nominet Internet Awards 2011, which highlights UK companies, charities and individuals which are making a difference on, or through, the Internet.

Under the category "Making the Internet Safer", Scam Detectives, which is a voluntary project run by Wrexham based web design firm Clear as Crystal, has been shortlisted for it's work in raising awareness of online scams both via a website at www.scam-detectives.co.uk and in the community.

The Nominet Internet Awards, which aims to highlight organisations or individuals who have undertaken specific projects which raise Internet industry standards and showcase best practice, were reviewed by an independent panel of judges chaired by the Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, and included Will Gardner, CEO of Childnet International, Dr Vicki Nash at the Oxford Internet Institute and Professor Sonia Livingstone from the London School of Economics.

The awards are run in partnership with the Nominet Trust, a body which supports initiatives that contribute to a safe and accessible internet. The Awards highlights projects which are making the Internet a secure, open, accessible and diverse experience for all. The winners will showcased at the next Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meeting in Kenya, and will be held up as key examples of Internet innovation from the UK, while bringing together, and improving, the global online community.

This year’s Music Week Awards saw SEAT and Universal Music awarded for the Music and Brand Partnership of the Year. The award was presented for On Track with SEAT, the automaker’s first involvement with a music-based marketing campaign.

The campaign featured 12 artists such as Ellie Goulding, Amy Macdonald and The Coral recording live sessions straight to vinyl at the Metropolis Studios in London. The ‘one-take’ performances were filmed and broadcast on Channel 4. Each artist recorded a number of their own songs as well as covering a song that inspired them. The fifteen minute episodes were watched by over three million viewers and downloaded from the Club SEAT website by tens of thousands.

The Music Week judges said of the On Track with SEAT collaboration, “”In a very strong shortlist, Universal and SEAT emerged as the partnership that best demonstrated the potential for mutual interest between music and brand.”

The award was collected by Steve Robinson, Head of Marketing at SEAT UK. He commented, “In SEAT we’re passionate not just about our cars but about the way that we bring our brand to life. I think On Track with SEAT and our partnership with Universal Music really reflected that passion.”

In creating On Track with SEAT, the aim was to produce something that reflected SEAT’s dynamic and design-driven brand values, while appealing to audiences and artists alike. Robinson added,

“I know that the challenge to the artists of laying down live tracks to vinyl was something they loved, and this really came across in the shows and recordings. Plus, through Club SEAT, we were even able to get some of the biggest fans down to Metropolis Studios to watch the artists performing for the show!”

The manufacturer has also recently linked up with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean for its promotion for the new SEAT Alhambra.

Following a £3.5m make-over, The Central Fire and Rescue Station in Leicester has been named the best restoration of 2010, at Leicester Civic Society's awards ceremony for architecture.

Constructed between 1925 and 1927, the Grade ll listed building represented the very best of facilities in the late 1920s but didn't meet current day demands " leading to a total refurbishment of the fire station.

The two-storey structure was project-managed from start to finish by expert consultants from WYG who were appointed by Leicester Fire and Rescue Services.

Philip Norris, Regional Director, WYG said: "When we were appointed on the project, much of the space had become redundant and underutilised. Our project manager and design team investigated various options, including sale of the building for alternative uses but it was decided that a total refurbishment scheme was the best value for money.

"It is great that the hard work of those involved has been recognised through Leicester Civic Society's award and that the intricacy of the phased development, which allowed the station to remain operational for the duration of the contract, has been recognised."

Areas of the project included maintaining the original external doors, replacement of the windows with double glazed units to exactly match the existing style and the use of multilayer insulation throughout all roof areas under new pantiles, also matching the original profile.

Stuart Bailey, Restoration Civic Society chairman said: "We were bowled over by the fire station. It was stunning.

"There's been nothing spared in the restoration and everything, including the lawns and the fences, are back to how they were in 1925. The most remarkable feature of this building, and one that instantly caught the imagination of the adjudication panel, is that it is still a busy working fire station after eighty-five years and as such is obviously more than fit for purpose.

"It's an incredible building and it still functions perfectly well as a 21st century fire station."

Peter Roffey, chairman of Leicestershire Combined Fire Authority, said: "This award confirms the decision to restore Central Fire and Rescue Station to its pride of place within the community.

"It provides our firefighters with a modern, fully functional fire and rescue station."

During the construction a suspended ceiling to the original first floor recreational hall was removed to reveal the original vaulted plasterwork and large central roof light. Following careful repair and replacement of the roof light the area has been transformed into general office space. The bar and billiard room now house meeting rooms, offices and washroom facilities.

As well as project management, WYG also provided engineering services to the project and was supported by architect Ferguson Sayell and quantity surveyor Baker Mallett.

The Central Fire and Rescue Station has also been shortlisted for the 2011 LABC East Midlands Building Excellence Awards.
