Imitate Models Direct From The 1950s

Fifties glamour is back! And thats great news for all the girls out there who arent afraid to show off their womanly curves!
Dolce & Gabbanas new advertising campaign featuring Scarlett Johansson has confirmed the look as another salute to the fuller figure and there is no denying how well she wears it.
More voluptuous models such as Lara Stone, Crystal Renn, Emme and Lizzie Miller have been attracting increasing attention recently as acceptance of real women into the modelling and entertainment industries continues to grow.
Following a notably more inclusive year in terms of plus size models appearing on our catwalks and in advertising campaigns, it looks like we really are approaching 2010 with a far healthier attitude towards what is normal and attractive.
So, has there ever been a better excuse to ditch the pre-Christmas diet?
If you favour the glamorous style of fifties icons like Brigitte Bardot and Marylin Monroe over the often unattainable androgynous look of supermodels such as Agyness Deyn and Kate Moss then Christmas 2009 could be very merry indeed!
This nostalgic style can be recreated quite easily and is a positive and gorgeous celebration of real women here are some tips on how to achieve it:
Make up
During the 1950s make up was very feminine and sophisticated. Eyebrows were shaped to appear thin and arched. Day make up was actually very natural, though a little mascara and maybe some eyeliner on the top lids would be used occasionally. Foundations were usually a light, peachy shade with the addition of luminous powder in the evenings, when smoky eyes and the signature red matte lipstick would often be added.
Undergarments
To create a smooth silhouette try a Spanx, M&S or Wolford slip.
Clothing
Fitted blouses with half-length sleeves are very typical of the 1950s style and can be worn with calf-length fitted trousers or a full skirt. Wide belts create a more hourglass figure by nipping in the waist.
Knee-length pencil skirts are also very current and have a distinctly 1950s flavour.
For the evening you could go for a strapless or halter neck dress, fitted to the waist with a full and feminine skirt.
Ballet pumps and kitten-heeled shoes were popular in the 1950s.
Accessories
A silk or chiffon scarf and good quality pair of gloves were often worn with fifties clothing so these could be added where appropriate. Clutch bags were also popular in the fifties. Grace Kelly famously held her Hermes bag strategically to conceal her pregnancy, leading to this style becoming known as the Kelly bag.
