Unlike some forms of exercise which can seem like a hard slog, cycling is easy and fun. It’s suitable for everyone, whatever your age, size, or level of fitness. It won’t cost you a monthly fee, it’s easy to make it a part of your weekly routine, and all you need to get started is a bike!

Regular cycling will help your aerobic fitness, stamina, strength, and muscle function, as well as reducing the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. It’s low impact so won’t put a strain on your joints, and it’s also great for combating feelings of stress and depression.

In fact, such are the health benefits that experts have worked out that cyclists are likely to live two years longer than non-cyclists!

And the good news is that you don’t have to kit yourself out in head-to-toe lycra and start tackling fifty mile rides. Gentle 10-15 minute rides to work or to the shops are just as good for your health.

So why not make 2012 the year when you give cycling a go? Check out the skyride guide to choosing a bike, and pedal your way to a healthier you!

For ramblers across the country who are raring to go, the aptly titled ‘Ramblers’ Break’ is the perfect opportunity to make the most of the Peak District and enjoy the comfort of one of the region’s most popular hotels – available now until 1 April 2012!

The two night break is the latest dinner, bed and breakfast offer from The Maynard to meet the needs of hikers everywhere, and will hopefully appeal to walkers of all abilities; from the seasoned fell walker to those who are still finding their feet. Situated within the picturesque Peak District National Park, the hotel is able to offer a base for a wide variety of different walks, so all visitors are able to fully enjoy the sights and scenery of this stunning region. At just £75 per person (based on two people sharing a double room), per night, the package is available Sunday to Friday and makes for a great mid-week getaway.

The two night stay includes a three course dinner on both nights in the two AA rosette restaurant, plus a full Derbyshire breakfast to start both mornings in style. All food is prepared freshly each day by head chef Ben Hickinson – a local lad with years of experience in delivering contemporary British cuisine worth dining for. As even the most ardent hikers know, energy levels need to be maintained throughout the day, so a packed lunch will be provided for trekkers taking up this offer, as they prepare to leave the hotel for the day. A free set of local walking guides of the Peak District will be provided for guests to enjoy.

In addition to this great offer, The Maynard is offering a third off any superior room upgrade! A superior room upgrade costs just £10 extra per night and includes more space to relax as well as fantastic views of the countryside and of course complimentary use of luxury bathrobes!

But why not go the extra mile and book one of the exclusive suites? The Maynard’s two stylishly furnished executive suites are available as an upgrade for only £25 per night. Along with offering the same perks as the superior rooms, both suites boast stunningly designed bathrooms which contain either a roll top or a large corner bath. The suite with the large corner bath also has its own private living room. Both suites are light and spacious and benefit from exquisite views of the glorious Peak District.

Situated near to Froggatt Edge, Hathersage and Chatsworth, The Maynard is a prime location for the perfect walking break. The historic building has been extensively refurbished to offer all the facilities desired by a modern traveller. The interior has been completely transformed with bespoke furnishings transforming this traditional country inn into a sophisticated boutique destination; while the hotel’s historic exterior still blends seamlessly with the beauty of the local landscape.

However carbohydrate is the bodies preferred fuel, though this is only because it’s easier to process, more like a higher grade fuel and for this reason one must consider not just the volume but also the type eaten, as refined carbohydrate is high octane rocket fuel…and we’re not machines.

Carbohydrate is the only macronutrient that is ‘none’ essential…we can not just do without it but we can thrive without it. The root cause of all obesity epidemics around the world is without any question…carbohydrate. In addition it is carbohydrate (sugar) that is responsible for destabilising the brain function and development, couple this with a low-fat and second-rate protein from carbohydrate sources, and you’re in big trouble as nothing is more stabilising to the brain than natural dietary fat, sadly lacking in these type of diets. Carbohydrate rich diets (sugar) damage the brain.

A new study out claims vegetarians have smaller brains linked to a deficiency of B vitamins found in meat and fish which would seem to fit knowing what we know about the damaging effects of sugar and a lack of natural dietary fat. However vegetarians (vegans aside) are quick to make a counter-claim that they get vitamin B from eggs and that Americans having meat as a high proportion of their diet also suffer this deficiency. Of course the more likely reason Americans suffer vitamin B deficiency is down to the high levels of refined carbohydrate. This depletes serotonin and greatly depletes B vitamins needed to convert amino acids to the neurotransmitters. Americans have a high ‘carb’ loading due to the processed foods they consume.

Vegetarianism is not a natural choice for us humans, whom after a quick check of the skeletal and dental evidence suggests, are indeed omnivores (animals & plants). We simply do not have physiology to process high levels of carbohydrate in our diet and stay healthy…think Insulin pancreatic cancer etc. It is only in the developed world where we see un-natural diets of a high carbohydrate loading, where we find people consuming a diet of this type we find..obesity, heart, disease, metabolic syndrome + many more. In cultures not exposed to processed foods (sugar) obesity is almost unheard of, but noticeable by their absence are the autoimmune and degenerative diseases mentioned before. The case against carbohydrate but in particular refined carbohydrates is overwhelming.

Having studied nutrition for many years now, I along with all my family only consume a natural diet free of refined carbohydrate, but also high in saturated (animal) fat with a protein intake of around 20-25%. Though this was not always the case as there was a time before my studies when my our diet was as most others in the developed world. However I was 45lbs heavier and in pretty poor health on a collision course with one of those modern diseases, my wife was overweight, our 12-year-old son had been overweight for most of his life. Thankfully that was then and this is now, we are all lean and fit in optimal health with no medical complaints whatsoever. In addition to this many of our clients are former Vegetarians or Vegans so we see at first hand the damaging effects this kind diet does to the bodies chemistry.

I would also like to make one last point and that is this: No human culture in our evolutionary history has ever adopted vegetarianism by choice.

Vegetarianism is therefore nothing more than fashionable trend and an unhealthy one at that.

The GBP59-a-day zombie boot camp experience claims it will “train and prepare people for the eventuality of a zombie invasion”.

Those who wish to be trained to fight against zombies wanting to eat their brains are taken in groups of up to nine to learn military techniques to avoid an unfortunate death.

On the day, the person going on the experience will join up to 8 other participants to initially take part in training from expert military instructors.

After being issued with zombie-deterring boots, helmets, safety goggles, Kevlar body armour, jackets and trousers, the group will get taught how to use their weapons, a pistol, grenades and a rifle.

The company say those training the recruits to the fight against the forces of the undead include a former Sergeant Major in the parachute regiment and the intelligence services.

According to a spokesperson anyone enrolled on the course will learn “How to work as a 4 man team and a 12 man team, how to clear rooms, anti-ambush skills from vehicles. All the army training is adapted to fighting zombies and so they are all in character, which gives it a three-dimensional edge.

“It’s all about learning to work with your senses – smell, touch, fear, sight etc. and is very physical,” she added.

“The founder of the course Roy came up wit the original ideal 18 months ago when he was training in the UK for pre-deployment in Afghanistan.

“He purchased some equipment and thought that if the army enjoyed this sort of training, then maybe everyday civilians would too. He therefore started a similar experience day in SWOT training which involved teaching people military instructions and various military tactics.

“Roy has always been interested in blood and guts, zombie films and the like, and on May 16th last year read an article on ‘How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse’.

“His idea then developed to start the Zombie Boot Camp, and he spoke to ‘zombie geeks’ and watched as many zombie films as possible. He also spoke to a theatre company about how to nail the theatrics side of it.

“He prides the experience on being extremely well-researched. The men who work there are very special – various parts of the army, incredibly skilled and build up relationships with the people who attend the boot camp – all about working as a team.”

Richard Kershaw, co-founder of Wish.co.uk, said of the experience: “We’re always keen to offer experiences that are a little out of the ordinary and we certainly think that’s the case with our Zombie Boot Camp day.

“It’s not every day you can say you have wiped out a warehouse-full of zombies, so it’ll definitely be a talking point amongst your friends.

“It’s also a great idea for a Christmas or birthday present, especially if you want to get something that the person you are buying for would never expect. Plus, if a zombie invasion ever did occur, you might even be able to save the world.”

To get your body in tip-top shape takes hard work though training at least eight weeks and sticking to a strict diet.

It’s a fairly normal sight to see men hitting the weights hard in the gym, ‘pumping iron’ and pushing their bodies to the limit. But for women this is often more of taboo, often weight sections are taken over by men.

But there are many women out their training just as hard for bodybuilding and figure competitions. These women take fitness training to a whole new level, dedicating their lives and changing the way they live to reach perfection.

Figure competitor Toni Rizzo of Florida State University eats only natural product and trains over 10 hours per week. Often this means she misses out on parties and outings with friends, but she says it’s worth it.

Getting her body to its peak physical condition is like a full time job, exercise is obviously very important but to really sculpt your body the right food is essential.

Most of her calorie intake comes from ‘good carbs’ like whole grains, brown rice and potatoes. An essential part of any bodybuilders diet is also protein – without which you can’t build muscle.

Healthy fats are also important including avocados, olive oil and almonds.

Female bodybuilders don’t starve themselves to reach perfection, eating regular balanced meals is what keeps them going.

Eating every two to four hours, Rizzo keeps her metabolism high so her body is always burning fat.

Fat-burning bodybuilding supplements can often help to get rid of excess fat, the most common fat burners are “thermogenic” and encourage the body to burn more calories by increasing metabolism.

This type of fat burner will also suppress your appetite and keep you filed up for longer but also preserving energy levels.

Endurance athletes need more than most as they are continually drawing on the bodies resources, consider them as a high octane fuel in a well oiled machine. However they are also at the source of the obesity problem and so you should monitor very carefully both the type and quantity you eat as they have a dramatic effect on the body chemistry.

It is without question that blood sugar levels are the driving force in the fat storage mechanism as this determines the level of insulin production. This goes against many who believe fat or more specifically saturated fat and over consumption are the drivers. This is incorrect as increasing numbers of scientific studies now show that it’s consumption of a high carbohydrate diet and not a high fat diet that is the main cause of fat accumulation, excess consumption of food is a symptom of being overweight and not the other way around. It is the fat cells themselves that disrupt the body chemistry which tell the brain to eat more and more. The alienation of saturated fat began in the 1950′s thanks to the now discredited findings of an American scientist by the name of Ancel Keys.

So back to the real culprits, when consumed carbohydrates are quickly converted into glucose and enter the blood stream (blood sugar). Of the two types of carbohydrate simple and complex it is the simple form (sweets, syrups, table sugar, alcohol, soda drinks, fruit juices) that have the biggest impact on blood sugar levels. These simple forms have little to no nutritional value but small amounts can be converted for use as instant energy, great…but hang on a moment. In order for the body to be able to use glucose as fuel it produces a hormone called insulin whose job it is to transport glucose from the blood to the cells, liver and muscles. The problem is these energy storage banks don’t have much capacity and so quickly become full. When this happens all surplus glucose in the blood gets stored in the fat cells. If this were to be an irregular event there would be little to worry about. But it’s not, as our present day diet is filled with refined carbohydrates in the form of processed foods and drinks, bread, pasta, pastries, soda’s, fruit juices etc. As a result we find ourselves with consistently high levels of insulin working overtime to lower blood sugar. The presence of high levels of insulin mean three things:

1. Fat cells unable to convert fat to energy

2. Weight Gain

3. Insulin Intolerance ( This is very bad!)

You have basically turned your body into a fat storing machine by constantly feeding it a high carbohydrate diet. Because our bodies cannot tolerate sustained high blood sugar levels a condition called insulin resistance begins to take effect. This is very serious and linked to many of the modern autoimmune and degenerative diseases we see today.

So what can happen when your body is a fat storing machine? How about type II diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, cancer, Alzheimers to name a few. Americans are adding, on average one and a half pounds of fat each year with Britain a close second.

The sheer scale of what we are up against (changing the mindset that 60 years of government and corporate propaganda have done, to reverse global policy on food provision and nutrition) awes me in the brief moment I feel it can’t be done. But then I remind myself of what it’s all about, together with Mike we believe fundamentally that Paleo works absolutely and the enormous changes it brings to every area of my our life and having not had this and then having this and by “this” I mean a profound sense of wellbeing and fitness, strength and delight it would be neither fair nor right not to spend every day telling you it is possible and that it is there for you for the taking.

We are absolutely passionate about this cause, we have the drive and energy to change what people eat, by changing the conventional wisdom around diet and weight loss.

We eat well. We eat a varied diet. We have seven children between us. We work. We wrestle with money. Today we struggle with a broken boiler and no heat. It’s everyday stuff but somehow it’s different. We respond to situations as and when they arise but somehow without the drama and by that I mean the shouting, the blame, the fear, the stress all the negatives which came from a negative diet: eating food that contributed nothing but negatives punctuated by the momentary salve of a quick hit of sugar. For every up there was a down and that hit quickly. We lived life like that for years and now we don’t.

And so I am here writing to you and telling you it is possible. It might be like throwing a pebble in the ocean but I will keep doing it because for those of you who are listening and who take the time to investigate these first principles, life will never be the same again.

Actually No, life has always been this way, it just got derailed by industry and the drive for profit…
