You have always been able to go for a run with a trusty pair of trainers, shorts and t-shirt. But having a host of high tech facilities beneath one roof is a big draw to pricy gyms.

It would seem though that people are now turning away from gym memberships and opting for alternative ways to save money and exercise. One example of this is the rise of the pay as you go gym.

For people with busy lifestyles and those who travel a lot this is a great way to have access to a gym when and where you need it and at a price you can manage.

Describing the service on its website, PayasUgym states: “This is the most exciting thing to happen in the world of fitness for years.”

And, then there’s another alternative cost-saving solution. High quality and affordable rehab and fitness products are becoming ever more popular for exercising with convenience. Products such as swiss balls, yoga mats, medicine balls and kettle bells, all of which you would expect to find at your local gym, can now be purchased by the average consumer.

As well as being able to diversify and enhance your DIY exercise routine from the average run around the park, these products bring the quality of a gym workout home.

If you’re interested in starting your own home gym then visit www.physioroom.com. As well as being experts in sports injury and injury prevention we have a range of exercise products with useful how to videos to show you the correct way to use them.

High-Intensity Training, a combination of aerobic and anerobic exercise, is reputed for improving strength, resistance, lowering sugar levels in the blood and releasing fatty acids. By burning fat fast in this way, the body is programmed to continue to keep on doing so long after the exercising has stopped.

Also known as Tabata, the idea originates from Professor Izumi Tabata of the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, after whom the training plan was named.

A four minute regime involves 20 seconds of intense exercise such as sprinting and a 10 second rest or walk. These sets should be continuously repeated until the four minutes are up. Warming up and cooling down is not included in the four minutes.

The physical demands of this workout means effective results are best achieved by athletes and keen exercisers – it was after all designed to improve the performance of speed skaters!

This does however mean that while High-Intensity Training may be a hit with professional athletes it is not a quick fix answer to getting fit.

If you are new or getting back to exercise the best approach is to work at a pace that suits you. Tackling work outs with a personal trainer or friend are also great motivators.

The Charity Zumbathon is taking place at Old Trafford Community Centre on Saturday 10th March and those taking part will be able to sample a range of Zumba specialities including Zumba Gold and Zumbatomic.

“The atmosphere is going to be fantastic. If you have never done Zumba before or if you absolutely love it, then you are in for a real treat!” explains organiser Fiona.

The Zumbathon will take place from 2-4pm and tickets are £6. The event is suitable for anyone over 10 years although under 16′s must be accompanied by an adult. One of the region’s leading foster care agencies, Fostering Solutions, has already pledged its support to the event with a number of their staff bringing along their trainers so that they can get involved.

Lisa Young, acting operations manager for Fostering Solutions explain why her foster care agency were so keen to take part; “Zumba is a great way to keep fit and we are always looking at ways to encourage young people to stay healthy. When we heard about Fiona’s plans for a Zumbathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, we couldn’t wait to get involved”.

Tickets for the Zumbathon are limited and going fast so anyone wishing to take part should contact Fiona on 07939564597 or email fgray1@btinternet.com to secure your place. If Zumba isn’t your thing but you would still like to help Fiona with her fundraising, donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/FionaZumba. As the exclusive equipment supplier for the site, CYBEX will be installing over 250 pieces of fitness equipment at SportHouse, in time for the official opening of the venue in March.

Once opened, SportHouse will be used by elite athletes from handball, futsal, rowing and athletics, and competitors from judo and wheelchair rugby. The site will support a wider sporting legacy by providing permanent training facilities for elite performing teams and talented young athletes, alongside the local community, after the completion of international competitions.

Situated in a prime location within Barking train station and less than three miles from SportHouse, the sales and marketing suite will act as a showcase for the facilities and will remain open throughout the summer when SportHouse closes for elite athlete use before reopening to the public in September. Included in the 1000m2 gym facilities at the site will be over 75 pieces from CYBEX’s cardiovascular range. This will comprise of 751T treadmills, 750C upright cycles, 750R recumbent cycles and both lower and total body Arc Trainers, one of which will also be featured at the sales and marketing suite.

SportHouse will also feature equipment from CYBEX’s Total Access range, which has been developed in accordance with the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) programme. A full range of CYBEX strength training equipment will also be installed. This extensive list of equipment includes ten Big Iron half racks and lifting platforms, eight Bravo functional trainers, six plate loaded stations and 17 free weight stations. Over 35 pieces of strength equipment will also be installed from CYBEX’s Eagle, VR1 and VR3 ranges.

Sport and leisure industry consultancy firm HBA was appointed as part of the leisure sector consultancy team and has acted as the advisory body on various aspects central to the delivery of the SportHouse project. Commenting on the opening of the suite, director Mark Harrop said: “The opening of the sales and marketing suite will provide the foundation for engaging with the local community, as we focus on promoting SportHouse as a world class sport and fitness facility that is both affordable and accessible to everyone.

“By working with CYBEX, we have been able to provide fitness equipment that not only meets the demands and requirements of the elite athletes, but also caters to all aspects of the community”.

The opening of the sales and marketing suite signals the initial phase in activating the venue’s strategy for creating a long term sporting legacy, as Rob Thurston, commercial director for CYBEX International UK, explains: “The versatility of SportHouse will ensure that users of all ages, abilities and sporting interests will benefit from the facilities for years to come. By equipping the gyms with an entire range of CYBEX cardio, strength and Total Access equipment, CYBEX can use SportHouse as a ‘showcase’ site, where new and existing clients can visit the facilities and see the diverse range of users and training requirements that CYBEX caters for”.

SportHouse will also become the UK home for the CYBEX Institute for Exercise Science, where it will run 10 REPS accredited training seminars per year.

The Common notion is that yoga is normally practised by yummy mummies or aging hippies and Bradley was no different in holding very similar misconceptions. Yet he is very honest in saying he didn’t really know what yoga was. A three year secondment to Asia completely changed his mind.

Although attitudes have started to change in the west over the last 10 years, the eastern approach to health and well-being is far more holistic than we find in Europe and yoga is part of day-to-day life in the Far East. On evening, before dinner he was persuaded to go along to an Ashtanga yoga class with friends. Despite considering himself very fit, Bradley says he found the class hard work. He felt completely exhausted afterwards and it took a number of days for his muscles to return to normal. However, he also noticed that the feeling of well-being lasted.

Enthused but still a little sceptical as to the long term benefits, Bradley decided there and then to give yoga a real go. Upon returning to London, he found an instructor and started to explore the different types of yoga. “It didn’t happen overnight” he said, “and sometimes I did feel a little disheartened that I was not as supple, or did not have as much core strength as some of my fellow students. Overall though it was an incredibly positive release of tension and it felt really good”.

Particularly with such a stressful role, anything that can help the mind and body to relax in a positive and healthy way brings immense benefits. By practicing yoga on a regular basis, we can build up a natural response to stress and bring a more relaxed state to our lives.

Both physical and mental traumas experienced during the working day are registered in the muscles and they can be worked out slowly and carefully through yoga exercise and controlled breath. This relaxing experience can remove stress or worries of life from your mind.

For people with stressful careers, yoga needs to be accessible, affordable, well thought out and welcoming, especially for first timers. The practice has been around for 6,000 years and the benefits are real; but parts of the UK continue to view yoga as a pastime practiced in suburban village halls or attached to a corner of a busy and noisy gym.

However, in Marylebone in London there is a brand new yoga studio that is breaking the mould. Set over three floors of beautiful, comfortable, warm and supportive surroundings, Indaba Yoga offers a range of classes, workshops and therapies, all run by seasoned and experienced teachers.

“Indaba is really fantastic – probably the nicest studio in London. The venue is super smart with great facilities but for me the best part is that is a definite work-out and the stress relief utterly great. We all know stress has emerged as a major cause of ailments and take it from one who knows, nothing is more effective in reducing stress than yoga!”

Tip 1 – when you go out to grab a snack, pick the smallest portion available. When you’re through with that, you can order a little more. If you order the biggest size, chances are that you’ll eat past the point of getting grid of the hunger.

Tip 2 – if you can’t do without the chips, then pick the straight cut chips. They have less fat than the crinkle thin chips. Yes, I know the extra fatty ones taste better, but remember that we’re not after the taste right now, we’re after losing weight.

Tip 3 – before every meal, drink a glass of water. Doing this before a meal could help reduce the amount of food you eat at meal times.

Tip 4 – don’t reach for the chocolate! Reach for mixed unsalted nuts instead. Nuts contain fat that the body actually needs to stay healthy.

Tip 5 – break the habit of grabbing a quick snack while watching a movie or a T.V drama or going to the cinema. Tip 6 – stop looking for excuses not to exercise. If you keep looking for them, you’ll definitely find them.

Tip 7 – wherever you go, take a bottle of water along. When you become dehydrated, reach for your bottled water, not a soft drink or any other thing available.

Tip 8 – be careful about what you eat. Avoid foods with fat, sugar and salt. Not only do foods with these not let you lose weight, they also cause serious health conditions.

Tip 9 – get a friend, and together, hire a personal trainer or join a gym. You need the friend to make you go for the classes when you’re looking for excuses.

Tip 10 – try out weight loss challenges. Setting weight loss goals is a great way to make progress toward losing weight. Tip 11 – take a half-hour walk instead of sitting in front of the T.V.

Tip 12 – try out a variety of exercises. Trying out different exercises makes working out fun and interesting. Moreover, if you keep doing the same thing over and over again, the body gets used to it and stops responding. These tips are a few out of a whole lot of tips. They are very effective… you just have to keep at it.
