The Fat Lady was thought it be more than 30 years old and weighed an impressive 61lb 6oz. She had been caught and put back more than 200 times by anglers, many of whom travelled especially to the St Ives fishery just for the chance to catch her.

She gained notoriety in 1994 when she escaped during floods and spent five years living in rivers. By the time she was returned to the fishery in 1999 she weighed over 40lbs and she continued to get bigger.

Although she was the largest freshwater fish in Britain, the Fat Lady was an averaged sized fish compared the biggest carp ever caught – a 99lb fish caught in Dijon, France in 2009.

Anglers can still find many good sized carp at lakes across the country, but catching a larger sized fish requires specialist equipment such as carp fishing tackle, carp reels and carp rods to give fishermen the best opportunity of netting a colossal fish.

Fishing is a great family activity and a pleasant way to spend a day especially when the weather is warm, so those who haven’t before tried their hand at carp fishing should give it a go and see if they can catch their own record breaker.

You see, the Speedmaster as we know it, as Omega would have the world know it, is the one that was on the wrist of three incredible, if slightly bonkers people who rode to the moon on the back of the world’s most expensive firework. However, this isn’t where the story began.

Before NASA got their hands on the Speedmaster and changed virtually everything in it, it looked a lot more like the watch I have on my wrist right now – the Speedmaster Broad Arrow. The distinctive hands (broad, arrow-shaped hands no less) were ditched by NASA in favour of thinner ones – the worry being that the original hands would obscure the dial, confuse the astronauts and send the command module off into the dark oblivion, or something along those lines.

In any case, it’s water under the bridge because Omega has gone back to its roots with a batch of re-edition Broad Arrows, commemorating the beginning of the iconic range. 321.12.42.50.02.001 may sound like a grid reference (maybe it is a sign to Omega that they have made more than enough special edition Speedmasters), but it is in fact the model number for the silver-dialled reissue.

The first thing that strikes you about this watch is the blued steel that Omega has used for the hands and markers; the other Broad Arrows make do with the plain stuff. Depending on the light, the blue changes from vivid, royal blue to deep black, and contrasted with the light coloured dial, it really looks special. That’s the next thing that strikes you – the dial. Yeah, it’s silver, but look closer and you’ll see no less than four textures. The outer dial is smooth satin, the inner dial is a fine, almost sand-papery texture, the outer sub-dials are polished and the inner sub-dials have a guilloche pattern. Press shots really don’t capture the depth of the dial and how each part changes compared to the other at different angles, and it was a nice surprise when seeing the watch in the flesh.

It seems a shame then that Omega insisted on sticking ’1957′ slap bang in the middle of the top half of the dial, in bright red no less. Yes, it was the year of the first Speedmaster, but it really does detract from what is a very handsome watch. It is only five millimetres of text though, so I suppose it can be overlooked, especially when the rest looks as good as it does. And anyway, the dial has a redeeming feature that more than compensates for it; walk into even a slightly dim room, and the white luminescent paint glows like a piece of cartoon radioactive waste. Seriously, it has to be the brightest lume I’ve ever seen on a watch.

The dial is mesmerising, but a watch is for wearing, so I adjust the simple, yet solid and well-finished deployant on the puffed-up brown leather strap, and slip it on. From the first moment on the wrist, it’s like it isn’t even there. It’s not as if it’s that dainty a watch either; at 42mm and with a chronograph movement, it’s neither small nor slender, but the way the lugs hug around the wrist just makes the weight disappear.

This brings me on to the crowning jewel of this watch – the movement. The small window on the dial at six o’clock hints at something else other than the hand-wound Calibre 1861 found in the Moonwatch, and it’d be right; flip the Broad Arrow over and there’s a sapphire case back exposing the mechanical goodness within. Inside is Omega’s technical masterpiece, the column-wheel’d and co-axial’d 3313 chronograph movement. It’s nicely decorated, and it’s possible to waste a lot of time staring at its intricacies.

This Broad Arrow re-issue may not be the glamorous saviour of Apollo 13, and the closest to space it has probably been was on board an EasyJet Airbus a few weeks ago, but it really is a fabulous wrist companion. The Moonwatch carries too many niggles for me, which in turn put me off the Broad Arrow, but I’m glad I finally came to my senses and tried one on. It has subtle qualities that only begin to realise themselves with time, as if the watch is rewarding you for being faithful to it. Rather than being a special edition Speedmaster, it is a great model in its own right; and deservingly so. Now if only Omega would read this and make one without the annoying red text on the dial…

Planning specialists from global management and technical consultancy, WYG, have helped secure dual planning permissions on behalf of Cromwell Retail Park Ltd for a £50m retail development in Cambridgeshire.

Submitted to Fenland District Council, the 25,000 sq m scheme will create over 500 new jobs and will see the former Wisbech greyhound stadium on Cromwell Road transformed. Plans include a 10,200 sq m Tesco food superstore, an eight-screen cinema operated by The Light Cinemas and a restaurant complex including family restaurant Frankie & Benny's.

On a neighbouring site, a further 10,400 sq m retail park has also been given the go ahead, with a number of retailers being lined up including, Next, Brantano, Matalan, New Look, Dreams and Sports World.

Bethany Brown, Associate Planner, WYG said: "It is great to see the new Cromwell Retail Park receive planning permission. The development will provide significant investment to the area whilst creating much needed employment.

"Planning permission had previously been granted on the former Wisbech greyhound stadium for a retail and leisure park in 2006-7 however, the development had been stalled by the market downturn and was unable to be implemented. The revised proposals see a reconfiguration of the floorspace previously consented, and now include an anchor food retail development and extend to incorporate a second site.

"The new proposals, which are the culmination of several years' worth of positive, sustained engagement with Fenland District Council, will enable a series of benefits to be finally realised for Wisbech. In particular, the developments will provide a substantially enhanced retail and leisure offer which will improve the shopping attraction of the Wisbech area, as well as delivering a series of improvements to the surrounding highway and transport network."

Jonathan Clogg, Development Director, Cromwell Retail Park Ltd said: "We are delighted with the outcome. We have been working closely with WYG to ensure that the plans created properly meet with the area's needs and the Council's requirements.

"It is great that we have a number of household retail names reserved for the retail park development. The planned Light Cinema will be one of the UK's first all-digital cinemas providing 3D cinematograph, sport, culture/music and video as well as educational conferencing for companies, colleges and schools.

"We are now looking forward to seeing the plans become a reality and to create a gateway that Wisbech can be proud of."

Every member of the team has a job to do to maximise the performance of the car, and it’s the job of the design engineers to whittle out every last piece of fat from each component. Choosing the right material for the job can mean thinner, stronger and lighter parts, and it’s the in-depth understanding of each material’s composition that allows them to choose the best one for each application. There is a core group of exotic materials used in Formula 1 that is also filtering down into the world of prestige watches – each one has its own strengths, weaknesses and variations, and are all used in very different applications.

We spoke to Amanda Chamberlain of Super Alloys, a leading supplier of these exotic materials to the Formula 1 teams to find out more. ‘The main reason the F1 teams buy our materials is the low density rate it has compared to the high strength at high temperatures. It’s as simple as that!’ says Amanda.

Let’s look at these materials in a bit more detail to find out what makes them so good:

Aluminium
This ubiquitous material is the cornerstone of good strength to weight ratios, and is found all over a Formula 1 car. The engine block, pistons and some gearbox casings are forged from aluminium alloys, making them considerably lighter than their steel equivalent.

An alloy is the infusion of a metal with another material to alter its basic properties – a cross-breed of sorts – and adding materials such as copper, magnesium, silicon or zinc can drastically change the way a metal behaves. It can be stiffer, stronger, lighter – all properties that can tailor the material perfectly for its job. ‘The main reason for having these alloys is purely to have high strength components which are also lightweight,’ says Amanda. The most exotic – and expensive – aluminium alloys are banned.

Oddly, aluminium is not a frequently used material in watchmaking – its colour, although more silvery than steel, is very similar, and its light weight can be off-putting, feeling almost cheap. Sports watches such as the Suunto Core use aluminium to keep weight down, and the Bulgari range also has some aluminium models in it such as the Diagono. Its durability, tarnish resistance and relatively low cost seem almost perfect for wristwatch application, but for the moment, it is often overlooked.

Titanium
Very stable at high temperatures (thanks to a melting point of 1,650C), very strong in compression, but difficult to cast and weld, titanium and its alloys are another well-used group of materials present in a Formula 1 car. Its low density and therefore light weight make it perfect to use in applications such as brake disc bells, engine valves, con-rods, and drivetrain and suspension components, where temperatures can peak at around 1000C. ‘The materials are also used for research and development work, wind tunnels and pit gear requirements,’ Amanda adds.

In applications that require high specific stiffness, titanium’s low density is not as appealing, with aluminium alloys and carbon fibre being favoured instead. Before the introduction of the wooden planks underneath the cars to prevent ground-effect aerodynamics being used, the titanium skid plates could often be seen sparking against the ground, but, due to safety precautions, these were banned.

Titanium’s distinctive hue and high strength are very popular characteristics in the watch industry, although, as with aluminium, some find the lightness off-putting. Breitling offer many of their professional range in titanium to reduce the weight, including in the bulky Emergency. Most manufacturers offer titanium watches within their range, and their low-key, rugged appeal continues to keep them popular.

Magnesium
Used in the extraction process of titanium from its ore, magnesium can also be a useful material in its own right. It is lighter than titanium, but also a lot softer, so it is not suitable for high-tensile applications. It is perfect, however, for fixed-sized structures with good weight distribution, like wheels, and because it is so soft, a failure will be in the form of deformation rather than shattering, providing better safety benefits. ‘It’s also easier to machine,’ Amanda reveals. The use of magnesium, magnesium alloys, or even aluminium alloyed with magnesium is banned from engine blocks and gearbox casings due to its high cost, and also due to the ferocious intensity with which it burns.

Hublot’s Mag Bang makes use of this expensive, super-light material, and is one of only a few watches to do so. Hublot’s ‘fusion’ mantra combines high-tech materials with contemporary design and the slightly yellowish hue of the magnesium gives it a unique characteristic amongst the range, with the benefit of a minimal weight of 72g. A magnesium alloy was used in the Richard Mille RM 038 made for Bubba Watson, the hard-hitting American golfer, to test the impact resistance of the company’s tourbillon movements.

Ceramics
Ceramics can be used both on their own, and as a constituent part of an aluminium alloy. The most common element in a Formula 1 car to be made from ceramics is the bearings. Wheels, clutch and gearboxes all use them, and their wear resistance makes them perfect for the job. Silicon nitride bearings have a very low density, so they are light; they also suffer very little wear and are resistant to high working temperatures. They are, however, hugely expensive and very difficult to make, so although the material would be excellent for use in engine blocks, gearbox casings and brake discs and pads, unless it’s a small component – it’s banned.

Ceramics are superb materials for watch making because they are light-weight, virtually scratch proof and extremely durable. As the technology becomes more viable, an increase in ceramic components can be seen entering the market, from bezels to full cases. Rolex’s cerachrom bezel, for example, is guaranteed to stay virtually scratch and fade-free for its entire life. Panerai, Hublot and IWC have moved the technology to another level, releasing watches with full ceramic cases. Marks and scratches are a thing of the past with this material.

Carbon Fibre
The early 1980′s heralded a major change in Formula 1 when McLaren engineer John Barnard introduced the first carbon fibre composite chassis. This revolutionary material, formed of carbon strands weaved into a mat and impregnated with epoxy resin, is stiff, strong and very light; three times stronger than steel and four times lighter. This material has become the backbone for Formula 1 engineering, and its superb rigidity allows the construction of monocoque structures that provide drivers with unparalleled crash safety. The technology needed to make carbon fibre is gradually becoming cheaper, to the point where some high-end road cars can be seen with carbon fibre panels, although it is still far too expensive for mass production use, and is not suitable for crash repair. Carbon fibre can also be forged to form thick structures as well as lightweight panels, such as brake discs and pads, and with some teams, even gearbox casings. It can even be used to form complex shapes like wheels and engine blocks, but due to the high cost and short lifespan in these applications, it’s banned.

There are a handful watches on the market that incorporate the classic carbon fibre weave into the dial, but Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team is the first watch to use forged carbon fibre as a case material. It has a strange, almost crystalline appearance, and coupled with its low weight and plastic feel, it creates a very individual and distinctive watch. The material is made by compressing seven micron thick carbon threads at a pressure of 300kg/cm, and the final finish on each case is unique.

Others
Metal matrix composites (MMC’s) use metal with a ceramic or carbon fibre weave embedded into them to create ultra-strong, stiff materials, similar to the aluminium-beryllium alloy used for a time that was discovered to produce toxic gases when burnt. Both materials exceed the elasticity limit of 40 GPa set by the FIA, and as such, are banned.

Steel and nickel alloys – more ordinary materials – are also used fairly heavily ‘for car applications such as steering, suspension, exhaust, gearboxes and engine components,’ says Amanda.

Steel, in its different states, is a widely used material for watches because it is hard, finishes well and adds a reassuring weight to a case. There have been a handful of experimental materials used by watchmakers over the years too – for example, silicon is used in moving parts due to its ability to self-lubricate, thus generating low friction.

Tungsten carbide, an alloy of tungsten, has been used by Rado in their cases since 1962, and is also used as a hardened coating in engine and gearbox applications.

Richard Mille developed the RM 009 for Felipe Massa, weighing in at a mere 30g using an aluminium-silicon alloy called Alusic. They then broke their own record with the RM 027, a plastic-carbon composite watch that barely brushed the scales at a miniscule 20g, less than a packet of crisps. Keeping weight down in the movement is titanium-aluminide, a titanium alloy, and the crystal is made from Perspex.

Ulysse Nardin has made the first movement using DIAMonSIL components, a composite of silicium and diamond that is light, extremely hard, and requires no lubrication, a watchmaker’s dream. It was developed using nanotechnology.

The majority of the materials described here have been developed for the aerospace and defence industries, whose research and design is constantly pushing the envelope to keep one step ahead of the opposition. These technologies eventually filter through to top formula motorsport, and also to high end watches as it becomes more affordable (or rather, less expensive). It’s strange to think that these fancy materials were once the leading developments in space flight programmes and fast-jet prototypes, usually run by NASA, but surprisingly, a lot of day-today technology was developed in this same fashion. New materials and technologies are being researched constantly, and with the advent of nanotechnology, the possibilities are endless. At present, shape-memory alloys (also known as smart metals), capable of changing shape and properties on demand are being researched and developed for the aerospace and medical industries; an example of the continuing development of exotic materials.

Who knows – it may not be long before it is possible to buy a watch that can change shape…

National outdoor retailer, Yeomans Outdoor Leisure, opened a brand new store in Worksop on Saturday 18th June. The new store offers the same high level of customer service and product knowledge but with a larger range of outdoor equipment than the previous outlet in Worksop. At twice the size, it replaces the previous smaller store located on Bridge Street. The new store will showcase the company's expanding range of tents, camping equipment, outdoor clothing, footwear and accessories.

Yeomans Outdoor Leisure is a respected national retailer which has been trading in Worksop for over 20 years, offering branded apparel and equipment for the individual or family who enjoy the outdoors – principally walking, hiking and camping. The previous Yeomans store had strong support in the area which the company attributes to its traditional approach, retaining the same excellent customer service as it did when Walter Yeomans started the company right at the beginning of the 20th Century.

The new Yeomans Outdoor Leisure store opened in the Priory Shopping Centre, increasing the Worksop store's floor space to 1200 sq. ft. providing visitors with a far wider in-store offering. The growth of interest in camping, hill walking and holidaying in the UK, coupled with the popularity of the previous Yeomans store prompted the sourcing of a larger retail outlet in the town. Yeomans is committed to continually providing value for money quality products, supported by the highest possible level of customer service and this is set to continue at the new store location.

A raffle was held on the opening day which saw the lucky winner and local resident, 11 year old, Richard Tomlinson win the popular 'Peakland Sonic' pop up tent.

Yeomans is the UK's largest independent camping and outdoor retailer supplying tents, camping equipment and outdoor clothing with over 106 years experience. The company dates back to when Walter Yeomans began trading as a saddler in a small shop in Chesterfield. He made a living from repairing pit harnesses, army boots and converting army uniforms for civilian use. A wide range of army, hospital, postman and service uniforms were brought into the shop with many being taken to pieces, dyed and re-made into clothes for re-sale.

Today the company has 102 retail outlets across the UK with an ongoing refurbishment programme in place to take the business forward for the next 100 years. Yeomans is also famous for putting on some of the largest outdoor camping exhibitions in the UK with up to 100 pitched tents available for viewing at each camping show. A calendar of events for 2011 is available online at www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk.

The response during the opening week was very encouraging and Yeomans would like to say a big thank-you to all new and existing customers alike.
