The competition encourages young people to let their imaginations run wild in coming up with futuristic, novel or practical suggestions for what direction deafness research should take in the future. Packs are available now – including guidance from Sonar himself on the mission ahead.

Sonar is a research scientist who happens to be deaf. He also has extraordinary powers including superhuman intelligence and super strength. Sonar wears a Cochlear Implant which has a very special “super” feature – it warns him of impending danger. Sonar has a new mission: he has pledged to find ways to improve the world for people who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing and he wants young people to help him by contributing their ideas on new avenues of research, new technologies and inventions that could help improve life for people with hearing loss.

The 2009 winner, Helen Thomas from Plymouth (then 14), envisaged a new type of contact lens that could carry information and subtitles for the deaf. Far from being science fiction, research into contact lenses with this functionality is now science fact – proving Helen’s vision worthy of scoping first prize and that children can come up with ideas of genuine interest to researchers in the field.

Entries will be judged in two age categories, 10 -14 and 15 -18 years, and can be in English or British Sign Language. The closing date is 20 January 2012 and winning entries will be selected by an expert panel including people with hearing loss, scientists and a Member of Parliament. Winners will be honoured at an awards ceremony at the House of Commons in March 2012.

“To encourage as many young people as possible to enter, we are inviting entries in a wide range of creative formats including short essays, comic strips and videos,” added Vivienne. “This is an exciting opportunity for children, parents and schools to get involved and empower pupils. As with Helen’s entry, children can have a real say in the future direction of research and policy and our winners will have the chance to discuss their ideas directly with leading researchers.”
