Staff at Sheffield’s Gems Hygiene have been getting involved in a variety of fundraising activities and have managed to raise over £800 for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Gems adopted The Children’s Hospital Charity as their annual charity for 2011, marking their 25th anniversary year by supporting a very worthy local cause. Fundraising activities over the year included a charity raffle at the company’s 25th anniversary celebrations, staff dress down days and a charity tuck shop. Customer services manager, Margaret Oldale also did her bit by running the Sheffield Half Marathon and raising over £50 in sponsorship. Gems raised a total of £853.14 and Gems’ marketing manager, Sarah Wade presented a cheque for the proceeds to Tchad Western, corporate fundraiser at The Children’s Hospital Charity. Sarah commented, “It was a pleasure to be able to present our cheque to Tchad and mark the success of all of Gems’ fundraising efforts. Staff really pulled together this year to come up with fundraising ideas and have also enjoyed taking part for such a great cause. The REACH 2013 Support Bundle is a worldwide initiative from chemSIX, supported by industry leaders Chemical Watch, ReachCentrum and Reach Delivery and is designed to make it very easy and attractive for companies to get access to the best information, knowledge and support on a small budget. In addition, it stimulates SMEs to (re)start their projects early in 2012 which is necessary given the tight REACH deadlines of 2013.

In 2012-2013 this will radically change. Along the chemical supply chain, smaller companies (SMEs) will have to become more involved in REACH. Most of these companies have little experience in the REACH process and many might even be unaware of any risks to their business.’
He added ‘Implementing REACH and CLP is a challenge, especially for smaller companies without staff departments and with limited resources. These companies typically have less time and money to spend on getting training and support. Our intention is to make more high quality support easily available online so that more companies can get better support at a lower cost.’

Sheffield’s Gems Hygiene is urging businesses to prepare early for another icy winter despite recent warmer than average temperatures.

T6 Heat Treatment is a 2 phase process which is applied to Aluminium, Copper, or Silicon alloys to increase the strength of the alloy by as much as 30%.

Phase One – Quenching

The alloy is heated to 500⁰C for 9-10 hours which causes the copper to dissolve in the aluminium and form the Single Phase Alloy. This is achieved by cooling the alloy rapidly with water which supersaturates the aluminium with copper.

Phase Two – Ageing Phase

The alloy is heated to 180⁰C for 9-10 hours then cooled by air allowing precipitation hardening. This forms copper aluminium crystalline structures, the size of which will dictate the strength. In general the smaller the crystals the stronger the alloy becomes.
