There are a vast number of ‘bogus’ companies selling car insurance at extremely low prices in an attempt to undercut the genuine companies.

The scam is working on a large scale because everyone in the UK needs to have car insurance even if the car is sitting idle in a garage for six months of the year, it still needs to be covered.

So any classic cars people may have such as an E Type Jaguar, which is just sitting in their garage they will need to get covered with some car insurance otherwise they may face being prosecuted.

One thing people need to be aware of when they are buying or renewing their car insurance is that they are buying from a recognised and reliable seller. If there are any companies out there who are offering extraordinarily cheap car insurance then a top tip is to just do a bit of a background check and make sure that they are a trusted company.

Buying classic car insurance is generally cheaper than buying insurance for a normal saloon car as they travel an awful lot less miles over a year than say a family saloon car would which lowers the chances of an accident which in turn lowers the premiums.

Around 14 luxury cars have recently been involved in a smash on a motorway in East Asia and the collision included eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Mercedes.

The damage caused to all of the vehicles has reportedly amounted to a combined value of £2.6 million. Some experts warn that the extent of the damage is so severe that rather than repairing, the cars may have to be scrapped.

Several videos of the crash have been aired across the web, with the disturbing image of bright red smashed Ferraris littering the road like trash.

Ten of the flash car drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries but no one was seriously hurt. Police predict that the mass pile-up was caused by speeding and that one of the drivers lost control on the wet road whilst changing lanes and hit the barrier, spinning back into oncoming traffic.

Reports from Japan say that eye witnesses saw people driving at nearly 90mph and that the cars travelling behind the incident slammed on their brakes but failed to stop in time before the collision. The Chugoku Expressway in Honshu had to be closed for six hours whilst crews cleaned away all the wreckage. Two modest Toyotas were also tangled up in the accident.

Warrantywise offers car warranty plans for all models of cars including big-named luxury brands like Jaguar, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes and Toyota. The ‘Staying Safe and Mobile: Older Drivers’ report from the International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK) and over 50s motor insurance provider RIAS, launched at an round table event at the House of Lords, reveals that older drivers could face losing vital years of independence – potentially up to 10 years – before they may need to. Consumers seem to fear that older drivers may not be safe or confident on the roads after the age of 70.

According to the study, 63% of British people believe that drivers should be forced to give up their driving licence at some stage in later life. Sarah Howe, Marketing Director at RIAS, comments: “The car is a vital lifeline for many older people and keeping mobile is essential for physical and mental wellbeing. We know from our experience and official statistics that older drivers have fewer accidents than younger drivers. This is partly because older drivers are more likely to self-regulate their driving behaviours, avoiding risky driving conditions for example. We need to encourage and support self-regulation so that older people can maintain the independence they need for as long as possible and recognise when it is appropriate to acknowledge when they are putting themselves and others at risk.”

The research, discussed on Wednesday at the House of Lords by a range of interested parties including Baroness Greengross OBE and Shadow Transport Minister John Woodcock, examines attitudes towards older drivers and the feasibility of self regulation versus enforced re-testing or surrendering of their licence.

Fit for purpose

Under UK regulation, drivers are not currently required to cease driving or re-take their driving test at any age. Drivers are, however, required to complete a medical questionnaire to confirm whether they are fit to drive, and when drivers reach 70 years old they must re-apply for their driving licence. The research revealed that 85% believe that re-testing should be compulsory, with 40% suggesting that this should take place at 65 or younger. It seems that younger age groups seem even keener on the idea of re-testing: two-thirds (66%) of 16 – 24 year olds support re-testing at 65, 60 or at an earlier age, versus only one quarter (23%) of those aged 65 or over.

Public transport not an alternative

The research also reveals that for many older drivers, public transport is not a viable alternative to their private vehicle – with just over half (53%) of drivers over 55 claiming that public transport is ‘never’ a realistic alternative for them. Reasons for this include the expense (63%), unreliable services (64%) and the services being physically inaccessible (57%).

In the ‘Staying Safe and Mobile: Older Drivers’ report the ILC-UK calls for the DVLA to allow older drivers to voluntarily restrict their driving licenses, helping people to make earlier and better informed decisions around driving in later life. The ILC-UK also suggests that the government should offer a 10% discount on car tax for older drivers who self-select their individual licence restrictions, for example, not driving at night or in extreme weather conditions, to act as an incentive for self-regulation.

Support for self-regulation

Two thirds of people (66%) support the idea of self-selected licence restrictions, where drivers above a certain age would impose restrictions on themselves about where and when they drive – for example only driving during the day and not in adverse weather. Seven out of 10 (69%) are in favour of lower car tax and insurance payments for those older drivers who have demonstrated that they are safe and drive less frequently. And nine out of 10 (89%) of those surveyed agree that older drivers should obtain medical advice as part of the self-certification process.

Dr Craig Berry, Senior Researcher at ILC-UK and author of the report said: “In an ageing society, there is a need to support drivers as they get older. Older people today are driving further and more often than previous generations and are more reliant on their car than ever. Our report shows that there is strong support for punitive measures around driving in later life but there is little evidence that these will lead to safer roads.

“We strongly support self-regulation and suggest that at the point of licence renewal, older drivers should be required to declare that they have sought the advice of a medical professional before self-certifying their fitness to drive. The decision to surrender a driving licence should remain with the individual as far as possible, as clearly views vary amongst different age groups.”

The ABI said that these restrictions would improve road safety and in the long term help to bring down insurance prices for younger drivers, which many people currently find that they are unable to afford. As well as these ideas, the ABI also said that they would want young people to take lessons for at least a year before they were eligible for their test and a ban on short-term extensive courses.

However, the government has dismissed the plans saying that Britain has some of the safest roads in the world and the driving test has undergone dramatic changes in recent years to make it more realistic and get young drivers to develop their skills.

The professional medical association and trade union for doctors and medical students is calling for the ban on all smoking in vehicles across the UK.

After reviewing some research, BMA found that the levels of toxins in a car can be up to 23 times higher than in a smoky bar. So it is asking for tougher action and for the current veto on smoking in public places to be extended to motor cars, to protect non-smoking adults and children from second-hand smoke.

According to the findings, just over a fifth of adults in England smoke, and on estimate between a third and half of smokers light up whilst in a car. The BMA say the young are vulnerable against the pollutants and that second-hand smoke can increase the risk of a vast array of conditions including impairing lung function and asthma.

Smoking is already banned in vehicles that are used for work purposes, like taxis but as yet no part of the UK has banned smoking in private cars. The All-Part Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health argues however, that policing a ban on smoking in cars could be difficult.

The landmark was passed, just 16 months after launch, when Elizabeth Ngulube from Stockport, Greater Manchester purchased cover for her Ford Focus Edge. Elizabeth, 39, says she saved “crate-loads of money” thanks to insurethebox, whose quote came in cheapest by about £2,000. “It has made driving affordable,” she said. insurethebox has pioneered the use of telematics in the UK. Policyholders buy an initial 6,000 miles of cover. A ClearBox, installed behind the dashboard, monitors their driving. Data sent via satellite assesses their performance by five different criteria. Good drivers receive up to 100 bonus miles per month. Each policyholder has their own portal where they can check how well they have driven and how many extra miles they have earned. “We’re delighted to welcome Elizabeth to our growing family of customers,” said business development director Mark Grant. “Launching a completely new type of insurer was an act of faith but our progress shows that people appreciate what we offer. We expect to reach 100,000 sales during 2012.”

One benefit of telematics is that, by incentivising better driving, it helps to bring down the number of accidents. Recent data showed that, as well as getting cheaper car insurance, around 60% of insurethebox customers receive discounts on renewal at a time when motor insurance prices generally have risen by 30%.

The study carried out by iKube also indicated that Llandrindod Wells came ahead of Hereford and Chester as the cheapest place to buy young drivers insurance.

Commenting on these findings a spokesperson for iKube commented:

“These figures are astonishing – of the entirety of Wales we didn’t expect Llandrindod Wells to come out above the likes of Cardiff – typically a good postcode for car insurance prices.”

In spite of this figures for surrounding areas of Swansea, Newport and Cardiff all did reasonably well for young drivers insurance premiums – ranging from £1,400 – £1,545, figures that are lower than the recorded UK average for car insurance for young drivers – which stood at £3,688 back in May, as reported by The Telegraph.**

Nigel Lombard, Managing Director of Motaquote, the parent company of iKube, commented:

“We are thrilled that iKube continues to offer competitive, affordable car insurance for young drivers. This research clearly indicates that our continued work to drive down the cost of premiums is having a positive effect and makes it even easier for young drivers to get on the road.“

iKube has been offering it’s black box insurance to young drivers since 2006 and have recently launched a new website that gives advice and guidance to young drivers as well as continues to offer affordable car insurance through its telematics black box insurance.

insurethebox, the telematics-based on-line Motor insurer, has released its first renewal statistics since going live last summer. They show that around two thirds of its policyholders who received renewal notices in July and August were offered cuts in their insurance premiums compared to last year. Some savings came to as much as £800 or more. This was despite a 30%* annual rise in car insurance prices generally. The figures represent the first test of a key principle behind telematics – that by encouraging careful driving it helps people to become better insurance risks. insurethebox policyholders buy an initial 6,000 miles of cover. A ClearBox, installed behind the dashboard, monitors their driving and assesses their performance by five different criteria. Good drivers receive up to 100 bonus miles per month. Each policyholder has their own portal where they can check their progress, how many extra miles they have earned and how they could have earned more. “Most of our policyholders have risen to the challenge of telematics and are making a big effort to drive safely, and those who do so are finding that their insurance is getting cheaper,” said insurethebox group CEO Mike Brockman. “Our experience has absolutely justified our confidence in the concept. There are, of course, many other benefits to society such as safer roads and lower CO2 emissions as people drive more sensibly.”

The average renewal saving during July and August came to 22% of their previous year’s premium. On the other hand, some motorists who had not driven so carefully saw their renewal premiums rise.

“If everyone received the same favourable terms on renewal, then good motorists would be subsidising less responsible road users. We are empowering car owners to control their costs – as long as they buy into our approach,” said Brockman.
Kieran Wilson, 20, is an insurethebox customer from Nottingham who drives a Skoda. He was initially attracted by a quote that was the cheapest by £1500. “Having earned extra miles throughout the year, it was an added bonus when insurethebox came in with a renewal quote that saved me a further £700. The cost saving to me is fantastic, as working as an apprentice for a mechanics firm finances are always a concern,” he said. Chris McMahon, 18, from Buckinghamshire also saved about £700 on renewal. He chose insurethebox last year after receiving a competitive quote. “I now go to the portal one or two times a week to check my average mileage and speeds and the routes I have done. Having been with insurethebox for over a year I have felt the benefits of safer motoring where it matters – in the wallet,” he said.
Launched in June 2010, insurethebox is the UK’s largest telematics-based insurer with 40,000 policyholders.
