There were reports of a ‘bright light’ and ‘orange glow’ travelling from northern Scotland to southern England at about 21:40 GMT. This prompted fears that a plane was crashing and even talk of UFOs as people took to social media sites to discuss the phenomenon. The police were contacted throughout Scotland. Grampian Police said many people had reported seeing a ‘flare or a bright object with a tail’, while Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said it had received reports of a ‘large ball of fire in the sky’. Strathclyde Police said it had been inundated with calls, while Lothian and Borders Police also reported taking a number of calls. Durham Police said air traffic control had confirmed there had not been any incidents of aircraft in difficulties.

The Met Office calmed fears by tweeting ‘Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite.’ Meteors are particles from space that burn up as they plummet through Earth’s atmosphere, sometimes emitting light, creating a “fireball” effect. Meteorites are larger, more durable objects that survive heating in the atmosphere and land on Earth. Dr David Whitehouse, a science writer, said ‘Occasionally you get a very big piece of debris coming into the Earth’s atmosphere and this causes a fireball.’ He explained that what you see when you spot a meteor is the fireball breaking up, and the ‘wreckage of a planet that couldn’t form properly when the solar system was young’. He stated that the fireball was actually bit of rock that had been orbiting the Sun for perhaps thousands of millions of years. A source from ThinkMarketing stated ‘It was an incredible sight and one I feel very privileged to have seen’. Hundreds of people across the country tweeted about what they had seen and the Kielder Observatory, in Northumberland, described it as a ‘huge fireball’ travelling from north to south over the county. Gary Fildes, observatory director, who was with a group of about 40 people when they spotted the meteor, said ‘We got an incredible view. It was phenomenal. They went absolutely mental. I was getting questions about what it is and is it going to end life on Earth? Mr Fildes, who has been an astronomer for 30 years, said he had never seen anything like it and described the experience as ‘one I’ll never forget as long as I live’.

ThinkMarketing’s Managing Director said ‘It really makes you think about how mind-boggling space and the universe is, and how much is out there’.

the charity may be forced to cancel vital repairs and put staff on notice

The charity that operates the last airworthy Avro Vulcan, one of the most popular examples of British post-war heritage, will be forced to put all staff on notice if at least £100,000 cannot be raised by the end of February. The final weeks would be spent putting the iconic aircraft into a state of protective hibernation from which it may be prohibitively expensive to recover.

In a statement to supporters, the Board of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust said:

“Assuming that the Trust continues the Winter Service work on Vulcan XH558 to the schedule that returns her to flight in time for the first of the year’s planned flights, it is now clear that without additional income, we will run out of funds at the end of February.”

The news comes as plans are being finalised for the Vulcan’s spectacular Diamond Jubilee year, in which she will fly throughout the United Kingdom to celebrate the accession to the throne of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on February 6th 1952.

The summer season also includes the 30th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict, in which Vulcan 607 piloted by Martin Withers, now chief pilot of XH558, captained the first famous Black Buck mission that disabled the runway at Port Stanley. 2012 is also the Diamond Jubilee of both the Vulcan aircraft type and its sister V-Force aircraft, the Handley Page Victor.

The last airworthy Vulcan is one of Britain’s most popular heritage attractions. More than three million people are expected to watch her dramatic displays during 2012, many of whom attend airshows and other events specifically to see the delta-winged bomber. She costs around £2million a year to maintain and operate to the UK’s world-leading aviation safety standards, but receives no funding from the Government or from the RAF.

“This makes us entirely dependent on a combination of commercial income and the generous donations of companies, families and individuals who love to see her fly,” explains Vulcan to the Sky Trust chief executive Dr. Robert Pleming.

“With many savings being made internally and the growing capability of our in-house engineering team, combined with steeply rising revenue from trading activities, our dependence on public donations reduces every year – this year we need only one third of our 2009 fund-raising target – but without this money, she may never fly again for the people of Great Britain.”

Dr. Pleming is a firm believer that Britain’s technical heritage should be alive, living, breathing and inspirational. “She is a powerful reminder of one of the most dramatic periods of recent British history. Visiting a static museum cannot compare to the spectacular sight and sound of her dramatic delta profile appearing low over the trees,” he said passionately. “We must not let our young people forget the knife-edge tension of the Cold War and the resolution of the people who stood guard over our Island during this often-forgotten conflict, or the incredible achievements of British engineers who continue to inspire the next generation.”

As well as raising £100,000 before the next meeting of the Board at the end of February, the Trust must raise a further £200,000 by the end of March. “This will allow the service to remain on-schedule and give us sufficient funding to reach the display season, when our commercial income will increase dramatically,” explains Dr. Pleming. “We have a vast range of fantastic plans to fly this remarkable aircraft – appropriately named The Spirit of Great Britain – at so many outstanding events that will never happen again. We have to do everything we can to reach the 2012 celebrations.”

Official Jubilee Flypast
“We would like XH558 to take part in the official Diamond Jubilee celebrations and are currently in discussions to make this possible,” revealed Dr. Pleming. “Success in these negotiations would also allow us to fly for the dedication of the new Bomber Command Memorial in London’s Green Park, should we be invited.” XH558 is one of only two Bomber Command aircraft still flying, the other being the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster, operated by the RAF.

Throughout the Jubilee season, XH558 The Spirit of Great Britain will carry a Book of Good Wishes, recording the names and message of individuals, families and companies that would like to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

At the end of the year, the handcrafted leather volume will be presented at Buckingham Palace and a duplicate copy will be placed on permanent display at the Vulcan’s visitor centre in Doncaster. To find out how to take part, visit www.vulcansalute.org. How to help the Vulcan fly.

It is now four display seasons since XH558 returned to the air as the last flying representative of Britain’s famous V-Force. Many of the systems that were renewed during the restoration have reached the end of their service life, so have to be stripped, inspected and refurbished.

Complex items like the ejection seats must be sent back to their suppliers for specialist attention and some extremely costly items like the brake parachutes must be replaced. “The aircraft is in outstanding condition, but the necessary maintenance schedule makes the 2012 Winter Service one of the most expensive we will be undertaking,” says Robert Pleming.

Supporters can sponsor maintenance of the brake parachutes, the oxygen system, the fire suppression system and the pneumatic system; the braking system and the ejection seat service have already been funded by generous public donations.

Supporters can also sponsor the fascinating process of non-destructive testing, which uses x-rays and other techniques to look deep inside the aircraft’s structure, and an engine-swap (replacing two of her engines with two that are in storage) that will help to keep her flying for longer by managing engine hours.

Everyone sponsoring one of these systems will receive a signed certificate and will have their names flown on a special commemorative plaque on the bomb-bay doors for the rest of the aircraft’s public life. Visit www.vulcantothesky.org and click on ‘XH558′s Winter Service’ to find out more about this and about other ways to help the last flying Vulcan return to the skies, or call 0845 5046 558 during office hours.

Postal donations can be made to: Vulcan to the Sky Trust (Reg. Charity 1101948), 1 & 2 Venture Court, Dodwells Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire, LE10 3BT.

Follow the Winter Service
Progress of the service will be covered in the Trust’s newsletter – sign-up from www.vulcantothesky.org – which will also explain the service strategy and the progress of urgent fundraising. Pictures and videos of the service will be posted on the Trust’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/Vulcan-xh558 and videos will be posted on the new YouTube channel www.youtube.com/user/VulcanXH558Video .
To find out how to help keep her flying, visit www.vulcantothesky.org where there is also a history of the aircraft and a wide range of Vulcan merchandise including beautifully-illustrated books, a fascinating interactive flight DVD and a limited number of the highly-regarded account of the Falklands mission, Vulcan 607, signed by Black Buck 1, Squadron Leader Martin Withers DFC.

Aircraft consumption in India is expected to continue its growth momentum, reaching roughly US $24 billion by 2016 with a CAGR of 15% over the next five years. All segments of the Indian aerospace industry grew substantially, with the OEM market registering maximum growth of approximately 20% CAGR over the last five years. Lucintel, a leading global management consulting and market research firm, has analyzed the Indian aerospace supply chain and presents its findings in its report, “Indian Aerospace Supply Chain Market: 2011.”

High domestic demand of aircraft, introduction of the defense offset policy in 2006 have provided immense opportunities for companies entering this sector. Lucintel’s research indicates that over the next five years, the Indian offset market is expected to witness double-digit growth and reach new highs over the next 10 years primarily driven by India’s procurement plans.

The Indian aerospace supply chain is sustaining strong growth through joint ventures (JVs) and partnerships with foreign aerospace players. Low labor costs, coupled with IT competitiveness, is creating JV and partnership opportunities for Indian aerospace supply chain players with global aerospace majors such as Boeing and Airbus for various systems and subsystems manufacturing. India’s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) sector is witnessing increasing interest from foreign and domestic players. Boeing has recently set up its MRO unit in India. Various others companies such as Airbus and Dassault are planning to set up MRO units in India.

Lucintel’s report, which provides trend scenarios and forecast statistics for through 2016, details the industry’s drivers and challenges; market opportunities at OEM, Tier 1, and Tier 2 levels; supply chain analysis; JV/partnership opportunities in Indian aerospace supply chain; and demand and supply scenarios of the Indian aerospace industry. The report also evaluates Indian aerospace supply chain through SWOT and PEST analysis and more.

Empower, entrust and listen to your people, says Timothy Carter, Nuclear Weapons Security (NWS) Senior Program Manager, Lockheed Martin. People tend to have very little confidence in the capabilities of the younger generation but they must be allowed to share their thoughts. Some of their great ideas could lead to a shape-changing event or a product for the market, Carter adds. A speaker at the upcoming marcus evans Aerospace & Defense Manufacturing Summit 2012, in Florida, February, Carter talks about empowering people, transferring knowledge and innovating in the aerospace and defense manufacturing industry. How is the aerospace and defense manufacturing industry dealing with budget cuts?

Timothy Carter: The current economic situation has required us to re-focus ourselves. Budget cuts across the industry have meant a reduction in manpower, problems in retaining the knowledge of our workforce, and erosion of the industrial base. Besides knowledge retention systems, to retain the experience our people have, we mentor, challenge, and team the younger workforce in order to have an overlap with the older generation. We found this to be the best approach in sharing and synergizing ideas between the old and new. People nowadays realize that this industry is facing an ageing workforce and that they must capture, retain and exclusively pass on their knowledge to others. There is not much time to adjust when face-to-face with a problem such as a reduction in force, so it is important to be proactive and forward-thinking. We recognize that manufacturing issues may come up in the future, therefore we have tried to position our manpower and facilities in a way that makes us ready to adapt to any change. How can this industry be more innovative and competitive?

Timothy Carter: Crises and changes in affordability cause companies to re-think how they do business and to think of new ideas. Companies can bring in new people for fresh ideas, but they should not necessarily pursue this as their only means of innovation and growth. By sharing information and teaming with other companies and forums, they may be able to solve more complex strategic industry problems.

We need to empower, entrust and listen to our people, but we must also look outside ourselves for solutions. Some synergistic combination of ideas could lead to a shape-changing event or a product for the market. If we do not listen or explore a full range of options, we may miss out on key opportunities. We will get more success out of our employees if we allow them to share ideas both inside and out. It is hard when executives realize that the business they are in today might not be the business they will be in tomorrow. This will require a change in the organizational culture and industrial base, which is never easy.

Is there a need to revise the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to open up new markets for this industry?

Timothy Carter: Yes. To be more competitive and to bring in knowledge, companies can form relationships with organizations outside the US. The reduction in industrial base does nothing but force us to think outside of our traditional borders for potential solutions. This means revisiting changing ITAR relationships and how knowledge and technologies are shared.

There are countries that want to expand their military power and space capabilities, so some people are afraid of what they may do with knowledge from US companies. Thus, it is important for executives to demonstrate that they will be responsible with the information they hold. Changing the ITAR policies can take time, but the first step is to demonstrate responsibility and that there will be a proper oversight over how the technology will be utilized or shared with foreign organizations. Come Hereand Ill Show You has been published for only 3 months, yet is already receiving rave reviews from international literary critics. With over ten top reviews on Amazon, plus reviews on literary sites such as Ezine and Lunch it is small wonder that the book is already heading towards the best sellers lists.

Come hereand Ill Show You is adventure novel that takes readers for a wild ride through the jungles of Laos and Cambodian, – and what a ride!

A veteran of the CIAs Secret War in Laos is hired to return to the jungles to find some missing property. He knows his client is not to be trusted, but she is beautiful, sexy and beguiling, and she offers him a fee of US$200,000; the combination of those three things wins him over, and then the wild ride begins.

The action is continuous and the book is hard to put down. Get ready for fisticuffs, fire-fights, ambushes, exotic locations and a bevy of exotic ladies. This is not a book for the faint-hearted.

The book is pulpish and follows the best traditions of the vintage Pulp novels by writers like Mickey Spillane and John MacDonald. The similes and metaphors are outrageous; the language is clipped and colloquial. The men are men and the women are darn glad of it. Needless to say, the women are fast and dangerous, and the hero is a two-fisted man of action.

Come Here and Ill Show You is an adventure-thriller. The action is not graphic and the seduction all happens off the page although there is plenty to excite the imagination. The book is often amusing, often surprising and always entertaining.

At the risk of sounding corny, the book could be described as a rattling good read for real men. The novel is available as an e-Book o Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and Google Books. There are also unconfirmed rumours about a film deal, but no details have been published yet.

Flowers are an important and very emotional way of expressing feelings. Offering flowers for every occasion is a trend that existed for more than 425 million years. There are many occasions on which one can offer the present of flowers to our loved ones or any person for whom we care. Some of these occasions are birthdays, anniversaries, festivals, weddings, promotion, get well soon or any other special days. Flowers will continue to play a crucial role in the lives of the people.

Giving flowers to the people you care about is a tradition being followed since time immemorial. This is the best way to express one's feelings. When one is short of words to express what they are feeling from within, flowers do the needful. They express much more than the words can express. Modern times have not changed this trend and the same practice is still going on although the packaging has changed a little. The flowers used are offered in beautiful bunches, baskets, etc; the packaging is much more attractive now.

Flowers are still considered to be the most suitable gift that can be given on any sort of occasions. The trends may have changed but human feelings are still the same.

Flowers express love, warmth, purity, sympathy, well wishes, enthusiasm, etc. Hence flowers are the best and foremost choice. In case a man wishes to woo his woman, he uses flowers as this is still the age old never failed way of expressing your undying love for your loved one.
