Mobile Phones – 2012 Olympic Games set for Mobile Broadcasting

Posted 20th January 2010.

At present the BBC is expected to broadcast the Games across television, radio, online and potentially in 3D although these eye-popping Quad HD plans are still yet to come to fruition. Mobile broadcasting appears to be more of a realistic target, as they plan to have the entirety of the Games accessible on mobile phones and smartphones.

So far the signs are good that the mobile phone carriers will be able to deliver such goals and the budget is already being formulated to make this a reality.

Roger Mosey, Director of London 2012 for the BBC, said: Only one in 50 people used mobiles to follow Beijing and it was shown that they didn’t like it much either, there were judders or people couldn’t get access to video. It didn’t catch on for Beijing but it is our big idea for London.

Boris (Johnson, London’s Mayor) has also said he would like wireless devices to wander around London and catch up with action and find where to go.

Mobile is slightly more contentious because there is the question of delivering to the Games area and then the pressure of how much pressure is being put on networks in London."

Many UK mobile phones carriers already provide pay-mobile television streaming services, and providing coverage for the nations most prestigious events would be a significant coup.
