Just 44% of UK mums believe that breastfeeding is always best

Posted 25th February 2010.

Over 1000 mums took part in the survey, which revealed that less than half of UK mums believe that breast is best and that 19% of UK mums feel its important to put their own wellbeing first, 16% believe mums should always put their babys needs first, while 13% feel its important to research all the arguments in favour of breastfeeding and bottle feeding before making a decision.

A further 8% argued that no one had the right to tell them how to feed their babies.

Breastfeeding is the method that has been proven to be the most beneficial time and time again, said GP Registrar Dr Clare Heggie. Unfortunately it does not suit everyone and lots of women who try breastfeeding and had to give up for one reason or another are left feeling guilty and that they have failed. In some cases they may give up because they have some complication or difficulty with breastfeeding, or because they have to return to work earlier. Ultimately, the decision of whether to breast or bottle feed has to be made by the mum and there is no point trying to breast feed when mum just doesn’t want to do it or when breast feeding is intolerable either to Mum or baby. It is vital that mums make their own decision about feeding using all the information provided.

Not only is breastfeeding more beneficial for baby, its more economical than bottle feeding, but its clear from these results that many women are still not getting the support and encouragement they need, added Clare Scott Dryden of KidStart. Many women are put under incredible pressure to breastfeed and if they dont feel able it can have a damaging effect on their wellbeing.
