Devon School Gets Sensory Boost

Experia

Posted 12th June 2017.

Students at Barnstaple’s Lampard School are set to boost their communications skills with a new state-of-the-art sensory room installed by UK sensory specialists Experia, funded by a grant from charity The Lord’s Taverners.

The special education school caters for students aged five to 16 with complex needs relating to communication, including autism. The room was installed after a £25,000 grant from national sports charity The Lord’s Taverners, to help Lampard School’s students with their speech, language and communication needs.

Experia designed and installed the room, which includes bubble tubes and mirror, an aroma cabinet, soundboard, interactive music board, LED lighting, fibre optics and an interactive IRiS system allowing users to control the room wirelessly through their tablet or phone.

The Yorkshire-based company is the preferred supplier for The Lord’s Taverners, which is the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity and is dedicated to giving disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance. Together, the partnership has designed and installed more than 100 sensory rooms for schools across the country.

Claire Cowen-Brown, Head of Care and Safeguarding at Lampard School, said: “The room makes an amazing addition to our school and provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to use as a calming experience or an interactive tool to help users with their learning. Students can use it for a variety of needs such as relaxation, calming, sensory experience, creativity and to hone fine and gross motor skills.

“The whole installation experience was great; the team were helpful, knowledgeable and very friendly, taking the time to understand our needs and the focus for our students. We hope we can add more equipment to the room in the future!”
Gareth Jones, Founder of Experia, said: “We’re delighted to work with the Lord’s Taverners again to install a room that is tailored to really benefit those who are using it on a daily basis.

The wide range of equipment gives users a full sensory experience, using light, sound and smell to invoke sensory development and help students with their communication and language skills.”

Experia is one of the UK’s leading designers, manufacturers and installers of sensory equipment, creating products to assist those with sensory development. The company works with health professionals, teachers and carers across the country to create tailored packages to enable individuals to develop their sensory needs, including state-of-the-art rooms featuring a range of innovative equipment. These include the company’s leading product, the Multisensory Interactive Learning Environment (MILE), a multi-sensory learning experience which can be tailored to the needs of the individual regardless of age or ability.
