Budget 2017 Challenges to Retail Business

HATTON GARDEN DIAMOND

Posted 11th March 2017.

Despite the Chancellor’s plans to create a further increase in business rates to London shop traders and in doing so potentially push local businesses out of the capital; family run jewelers; Hatton Garden Diamond Group of Stores, remain unwavering in their determination to launch their flagship website and compete with the online retail giants.

The luxurious website www.hattongardendiamond.com showcases a range of quality diamond, gold and platinum jewellery available at their three Hatton Garden jewellery stores; ‘Regency’, ‘Dynasty’ and ‘Harmony’, based in the heart of the popular historic jewellery quarter of London, Hatton Garden EC1.

The stylish website will give new customers the chance to view a unique range of platinum and diamond Jewellery with beautiful graphics and inviting descriptions: ‘The champagne diamond ring, with a hint of lemon, resembles the sparkling colours of champagne, on a scorching summers evening, enveloped in a cluster of cloud white diamonds’. With a vast range of rings, bracelets and bridal wear, the new site has been carefully designed over nine pages, offering a glimpse of what is available within the three intimate stores, dotted along Hatton Garden.

The new website will also give Hatton Garden Diamond Group of Stores, the chance to fully engage with their audience and encourage shoppers to visit any of their three stores in the heart of the capital. Special offers, blogging and access to a variety of social media platforms, demonstrates that Hatton Garden Group of Stores, are keen to have an online presence.

According to founder and owner Stephen Perry: “What makes us different is the meticulous attention to detail that goes into ensuring that each piece of jewellery we design or showcase in our three Hatton Garden stores – Regency, Dynasty and Harmony; fully reflects the natural beauty of the diamond or metal that is used to create its stunning appearance.”

With respect to possible changes to taxes by the Phillip Hammond, Stephen was keen to point out that MPs need to be more aware of challenges being faced by retailers due to the digital age yet strangely, retail giant Amazon, just a stone throw away from the Hatton Garden jewellery quarter, seem to continue to enjoy tax relief such as reduction in taxes for their warehouses, which seems at best totally disproportionate to Amazon’s retail neighbors, argues Stephen’.

Stephen continues: “Despite our challenges, we as a business, know the importance in offering the personal touch, especially when it concerns repairs and bespoke designs.

We utilise the expertise of our in-house Goldsmith team, who have over 30 years experience, in designing and repairing rings, necklaces, and bracelets, a service level that a online retail giant would struggle to deliver’.

In the current budget report, Hammond has stressed that more emphasis will be placed on the self employed by increasing national insurance rather than targeting business rates however, this could be argued as just a veiled approach in adding pressure to the self employed retailer. The debate rumbles on, but not without the need for further debate and pressure from not only retail owners but city MPs who can use their powers of persuasion to draw attention to this ongoing issue, which could damage the high street retail business for good.
